Anyone have any knowledge on when or what it may look like when they redesign it hopefully sometime this decade? With the new sequoias being downsized somewhat from the previous gen, and then the new land cruiser coming out I am curious how they plan on marketing the 4runner and where they will fit it in the lineup?

Curious if the changes made the sequoia more trail capable vs previous gen's.

That is actually a good question, because the original speculation was that the 4Runner would end up looking like the Lexus GX550. But the new Land Cruiser seems to have taken that slot in the lineup. With the LC back as the "high end" offroad vehicle and the Sequoia downsizing slightly, my guess is that you will see the 4runner come out as a sportier offroad option aimed more directly than it already was at the offroad audience, similar to what Ford did with the new Bronco. Wouldn't be surprised to see it with a twin turbo engine since that seems to be the direction Toyota is going with all of their engines, but the question is whether it will be the 4cyl TT from the Tacoma or the 6 cyl TT from the Lexus GX 550.

I'm curious about this as well. With the new Land Cruiser photos and the fact the new Lexus GX is going to be built on that platform I've wonder if they're going to eliminate the 4Runner, even though it sounds crazy. Maybe the 4Runner and Tacoma will share a platform and the Land Cruiser and Lexus GX will share a different one. But with the Land Cruiser appearing to be reduced in size I've wondered if they're going to have the Land Cruiser and 4Runner at the same time in very similar sizes.

The GX used to be based on the 4Runner and the LX based on the Land Cruiser. With the GX downsizing I've wondered if they are doing a major overhaul. Will the Lexus LX be built on the Sequoia platform going forward?

Toyotas are all going with the reduced engines but turbo. Probably a 4 turbo. 2024 Tacoma already tells you your answer. 4Runner will be the same.

Sequoias are slightly smaller and fill the spot around the bigger LC going away. If you want the original LC size and luxury, you go with the Lexus. Tundra and Sequoia should be on the same platform. Both look thinner/less wide.

LC will be a 4 turbo as well. They are going to be smaller and sell at a lower price point. You will be able to get a basic LC that is not a luxury car. I believe they will use the LC badge as their "Off road" vehicle category. Similar to the Bronco brand for ford.

Would think the new LC and 4runner will be working the same market. I don't see the 4runner ever going away though.

EPA/laws on mpg for a manufacturers' vehicle offerings is causing the reduced engines and smaller SUVs. Thus no fun vehicles anymore.

What?

Land Cruiser has always been the off road vehicle category. It's just a question of whether it was the Station Wagon, Heavy Duty, or Light Duty (Prado) version, and the US chicken tax traditionally killed any of the non-premium trims of the Station Wagon from coming to the US. You could get the Station wagon and Light Duty (Prado) in Lexus trim, because the Lexus price made up for the chicken tax.

Going forward, the Station Wagon version will only be sold as a Lexus LX. The Light Duty (Prado) will be sold in the US as a Land Cruiser and still as a Lexus GX.

The 4Runner may share some architecture with the LC lines, but my understanding is it is much more aligned with the Tacoma than the LCs. It competes with your Broncos, Wranglers, etc.

There is probably some truth to this, but the new 4Runner's turbo 2.4L puts our similar HP and more torque than the current 4.0L V6. I haven't seen power curves, but I can guarantee that it makes torque faster, so it is much more "fun". The i-FORCE max pairs the same engine with an electric motor and a battery pack to generate 326 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque. That's game changing power if you're used to older 4Runners.

For a short period of time before they discontinued it, the LC was more in the Luxury end of the spectrum even if it was still bullet proof. They got seriously off track and minimized their own market when it took $100k to get into a LC. Their new LC offering is supposed to be much more affordable, but I would be surprised if they didn't have at least one version with the turbo v6 from the Lexus line.

That's just it, they didn't get off track. The 80, 100, 200, and 300-series Toyota LC were all premium priced in the US because of the chicken tax. They didn't need to lower the price, because the model had such a fanatic following and reputation, they sold themselves even at the premium price. Anything they sold in the US was bonus.

Elsewhere in the world, you could get a LC with steel wheels, cloth seats, a spare tire carrier, snorkel, diesel engine, and manual transmission, but the margins on those wouldn't be enough to offset the tax.

I don't think there's much of a chance it gets the twin turbo V6 that the GX is getting if the new LC doesn't even have that option. Will probably have the same 4 cylinder options as the Tacoma.

As far as pricing & fit within the lineup goes, it seems like it has to start a decent amount cheaper than the new LC with some overlap maybe on the highest trim levels. This would be nice as that means little to no price increase over the current gen (and maybe even a slight chance of it being cheaper if then new one is smaller).

There isn't a 4 cylinder in the Tacoma offered with twin turbos. It's a single turbo 4 cylinder or turbo + hybrid 4 cylinder.

My mistake. I knew the Tundra had a twin turbo and thought the new turbocharged 4 cyl engine for the Tacoma was a twin also.

The new LX600 and the Sequoia share the same body & underpinnings now and are basically the same vehicle.

The Land Cruiser we're getting is essentially the new Prado and then the Lexus version, the GX. Both of which share the same body & frame.

Eh I wouldn't go that far. As I understand it basically all the body on frame Toyotas now share the same "platform." New, Prado, Tacoma and Tundra too.

I do think the decision to not bring a 300 series over here in Land Cruiser form is partly to do with changes to the new Sequoia. But the 300 series is still pretty different from the Sequoia.
