I'm considering a few large SUVs: Expedition, Tahoe, and Sequoia.

Love Toyota, but the Sequoias are hard to come by in the right trim (not looking to spend $80k).

How reliable are Expeditions?

From what I've read, the Tahoes aren't great and the Expeditions seem better.

Any insight is appreciated.

I'm a Toyota fan so biased but Ford took about ten years to fix their ecoboost engines to the point they're not being torn apart at 60k miles. 10 speed transmission could be iffy too. If you want to hang onto a car for 200k plus miles look at the older 5.7 liter Toyotas or the older GX/LX. Domestic companies will also bend you over on warranty work.

I find "flying wrenches" from YouTube a good source of all that's wrong with Fords as he's a Ford mechanic.

Car care nut's YouTube channel would be a good source for Toyota/lexus issues.

I have the older model but same basic engine they still use. Closing in on 290,000 miles.

3 to 5 yr old sequoias, armadas, landcruisers will run for 15+ more years.

Don't buy a new Sequoia, get a few years old. It will last 300,000 miles.

How long term are we talking?

My Expedition turns 25 next month. Got almost 250,000 miles on it. Two kids drove it during college.

4x4, XLT, 5.4L V8, load levelling suspension
Probably spent $10,000 in repairs over 25 years.
Even still has the factory windshield (which is pitted beyond belief) with the expired Texas inspection sticker from 2001.

If I'm forced to buy a full size SUV an Armada is high on my list

Back to the OP's question I see enough complaining about the 10sp transmission to give me pause about buying one.

We've had three Expeditions and one Navigator with the eco boost. No problems on any of them. I think the GMC/Chevy Yukon/Tahoe exterior looks better, but I think the Expedition has every other advantage. Our 2023 ten speed is unbelievably smooth, even for a four wheel drive.

I stand corrected on the current ecoboost. Here's some more context…
