Walked by the oil section at my local home depot and noticed that the Castrol synthetic is a full $11 cheaper pwr 5 quart jug than local oreillys. As a matter of fact the Castrol and a fram filter was cheaper than oreilly brand synthetic with a microguard filter. I was extremely surprised by this and bought enough stock for 3 oil changes. Am I the only one that didn't know home depot carries cheap oil?

I didn't know they had any automotive products. Then again, my local Lowe's now sells golf carts, so I guess they are expanding.

I spend a lot of time in home depot and feel like I've never seen it, but the section was dang near cleaned out. Maybe it is just a few as we have only lived by this one a few months?

Visit the Walmart oil section, and then tell us how reasonable is the HD oil. Or Oreily. Or Autozone. Or NAPA. Or...

Walmart is about $2 cheaper but I got 10% off at HD so I ended up with a better price at HD, but will definitely keep it in mind, especially with free wal mart delivery through amex

I don't like going to Walmart, but I do go there to buy oil as it is always noticeably cheaper than Oriellys.

I like the 12qt bag in a box at Walmart. Usually under $60 for M1 synthetic. It's the only reason I ever go to Walmart, and I just go in the auto center entrance to buy it.

O'Reilly price matches FYI. Even if not the same brand, for example batteries...they'll match a similar battery (size group, cca, ah, etc) of a different brand.

Walmart has a 5 qt jug of Mobil1 full synthetic for around $28 and maybe $10 for a filter fyi. Wish M1 still had the rebates.

Unless you're going royal purple, is there really much difference between any of the bigger brands of synthetic?

I will say I see myself going by Walmart more as the one I didn't realize was a couple miles away has Ethanol free fuel

What makes Royal Purple different?

Is different better?

I ask because I heard long ago that Royal Purple was great, then I heard it broke down faster than other synthetics... and idk anything, just want the real answer

Yep. I watch for deals on amazon and use prime card which gets you 5-6% back, haven't seen cheaper in stores in years

At the chain stores you have to buy the discounted combo deals to get a sound price.

I was about to come on here in defense of the better Fram Ultra filter. For the last bunch of years, its been proven by many independent tests to be one of the best filters on the market. It was what I ran on our Chevy's here.

But I googled it just be sure, and it looks like Fram was bought out by one of those terrible conglomerate corporate vampires and the quality is immediately suspect, as they have moved manufacturing to Brazil (from the US) and have already started cost cutting.

By the way, if you ever wanted to know any thing about oils or filters you should read Bobistheoilguy forums. These guys are more pedantic about lubricants than gun bros are about ar15's.

I don't care about ratings. Cut a fram open and cut a wix open and you will see the difference. Ive seen "highly rated" filters cut open that were disappointing inside.

edit: upon further review the Ultra series does contain adequate filtering media, rated at 20 microns. Impressive. All the fram filters i have seen was nothing better than a sheet of toilet paper in a can.

For years the Fram Ultra was equal to or better than both Amsoil and Royal Purple.

I feel like I'm going to go try to find some made in the USA Ultra's and buy a few before they are all gone. Them we'll see if this new corporate overlord destroys the brand or not.

Champion still makes the Fram Ultra right?

It's the only Fram I buy. Very good filter.

Wal Mart is good for oil but i've learned to just go through the front, grab a buggy and head to the back. Anytime I try to go through the oil changing station and check out there I have to wait 15 minutes for anyone to acknowledge me.

Another WalMart-for-oil guy here.

I'm astounded when I see the 'sale' fliers from Advanced or AutoZone and their 'sale' prices are higher than what WalMart charges every day. It goes for filters, too, it seems.

But I am surprised by how damn expensive transmission fluid has gotten. Or, maybe it's just because on most of the older 3/4 speed automatic RWD vehicles I've driven you hardly ever had to worry about changing the stuff, but just about anything 'modern' requires it be be changed. Progress, right?
