Considering getting a lightly used Expedition. Anything to be concerned about for '20-'22 model years? Thanks

Stay away from
Covid year used vehicles with low miles. They all had problems due to crappy suppliers and quality during 2020-22.

Buy a used 2023 or a pre-2019 IMO

We got a 2021 in September and it's been great so far. I was nervous about the same thing, but we just needed a vehicle quick.

Anything pre-2021 will have had or will have cam phaser issues. If it did have the cam phasers issue cared for there is a certain part you will want to know that it was replaced with (someone here will have it). If it didn't be prepared for a hefty $2500 plus fix dependent on miles. Google ford cam phaser 3.5L issue. I had a 2019 and 2020 with the 3.5 and both needed the replacement.

Our 2021 is getting its transmission gutted right now. Other than that we love the vehicle

10R80s are all under filled from the factory for some reason.

Daily carpool and Starbucks runs never heat the fluid up to an acceptable level. Most of the expeditions I've seen with transmission failure are vehicles that are driven to drop kids off at school and soccer. Ones that are driven and filly warmed up usually eke by without issues.

Topping it off will prevent premature failure of these.

How much do you add? Can you over-fill it?

If you add it, will it hurt if you take a long trip?

I've added 1-2 quarts in most I've seen. You need a burn sleeve and an "ove glove" and a pump to add it. , or ask the dealer to check it. Insist on them doing it while you watch. They'll find it's low.

You can only use Mercon ULV on it.

Burn sleeve? Does it need to be filled hot?

There's no dipstick under the hood. Only under the vehicle by the cats. And yes. It needs to be filled at temperature.

You got the soccer practice part right, but ours is 110 miles round trip

What is "full"? I pulled the dipstick tonight, which has numbers/letters, and I couldn't find a number I trusted online. 2021 Max

Also, side note, what's the difference between filter AA5Z-6714a and b? My truck takes one and expedition takes another according to parts.ford.com, but they look the same to me?

Most 2020s were built in 2019

Is it AB and C?

Nope - It was the middle one. It was between 4/5, so it looks like I'm good. I have a hard shift out of neutral here and there, so I was hoping this might help.

Thanks for the help

Diagnosis for our 21 is CDF hub failure requiring full rebuild. After some research this appears common and almost guaranteed. My question is what's to prevent this from happening again and why has it shifted so poorly from mile 1?

Theres a press fit bushing that sometimes moves back and allows fluid to get into places it shouldn't be. The updated part
Solves this issue.

I bought a 22 Expedition Timberline. I wrote a review of my opinions on it - overall I really like it. Still running down a vibration at 55-65mph - but I haven't had any of the big issues yet - and it's a COVID truck. I had 2 different shops balance the tires, one was a road force balance - and a full alignment. New tires go on Thursday and if that doesn't sort it then she goes to Ford.

This is one of those things that's repeated here all the time, but is there any data out there to support it?

And I guarantee it isn't "all" 2020-22 vehicles.

We have a '21 F250 and F150 that are great.

Our '23 Expedition (loaded XLT 4x4) had a few glitches such as all the controls on the door not working intermittently and a leak from the rear window.

21, 22, and 23 F150 all have no issues. I will say the 23 build quality isn't as good as the 22 and 21 but that one was built in Detroit. 21 is clayco and 22 is the Rouge EV plant.

Anecdotal but my own experience.

None? There is already one major example on here and you can easily find more from mechanics on YouTube. Supply chain issues because of Covid and keeping shareholders happy aren't a good mix when making a quality product.

This is all anecdotal evidence. How many expeditions with 10R80 transmissions have not had issues?

I'd say probably 85-90% have NOT experienced transmission issues?

I'm saying there's no hard evidence that manufacturers decided to use crappy or second quality components to make products of subpar quality during the pandemic. Mechanical issues with any mass production products have existed since before the pandemic.

Hondas 9 speed transmission issues, Nissan Cvt issues, GM exotic 3 issues, GMT900/K2XX 6L90 issues etc.

My 2018 F150 had its transmission rebuilt at 50k. I don't think it's a Covid thing, just a new 10 speed with a lot of teething issues.

GM is having issues with the 10r80 as well - though my expedition with almost 19k miles has had no trans issues so far

I watched a video a couple days ago on my feed about checking the 10R80 fluid level and realized I had checked it hot, but not running. I guess I assumed they'd be the same.

Anyway, I went back and checked it running, and sure enough it was low. I had to add a little less than a quart, but was able to get it right between 4 & 5. It might be confirmation bias, but does seem to run better.
