Specific to the newer Defenders, does anyone have any first or second hand accounts of any issues pertaining to maintenance and reliability? I'm aware of Landrover's reputation for low reliability, but I'm wanting to specifically know more about that on these Defenders. I've searched the forums and didn't come up with much other than the generalities about all Landrovers. Would be great to hear from any actual owners or people that know an owner, and if the owner regrets buying it or is really happy with it. Thanks!!

Search on YouTube. Specifically a Land Rover mechanic's site. Forums and such will be biased or get you to buy another brand they are loyal to.

Good idea, thanks!! I have done quite a bit of research online but not necessarily for mechanics that would work on them.

I have a 2018 Discovery and it has been a great car. Same engine, same platform. Couple little things went bad like the hood release cable. Alternator went out at 65k miles, which I think is a little early, but alternators do that sometimes. They also fixed the rear hatch release as a recall but we had never had a problem with it.

Oil change is expensive at the dealer but we don't do them there. And you only need one every 16k miles so it pretty much averages out.

I have 68k miles, been a good car.

The thing that drives everyone crazy is the entertainment system. Seems like 90% of people complaining is because the entertainment systems will occasionally not turn on. Mine has done that a couple of times but it came back on when I re-started the car. The Meridian stereo is incredible so I just put up with it.

When I get rid of the car I will probably get a defender. They had issues the first year but I know about 10 people who have them and they all love them.

Last thing... I doubt I would own one living in Texas but in Colorado it comes in nicely. You just don't really get off of pavement in Texas, better off with a pavement queen like a Sequoia or Tahoe. Defenders/Discoverys are simply the best snow vehicle ever made, Texans don't need that.

Last consideration - mileage and power. I get 22 on a trip and 19 around town and this is in the mountains. When I hauled the travel trailer (6600 pounds) it dropped to about 10mpg. My previous car was a 4runner but it had zero power and really couldn't handle my driveway properly.

Thank you for this information, it's very helpful. I've test driven a couple of Defenders, and even though I'm one of those Texas guys that won't be getting off the pavement much, the Defenders have an excellent ride on the streets and highways. I was highly impressed. Of course, if we get a Defender, it will mainly be for my wife as a daily driver, but it's to replace another vehicle my wife is scared to drive because of its unreliability.

Similar experience in our 2018 Disco. The only gremlin we've had is the occasional problem with starting up Carplay. Otherwise it's been a great ride.

Doug DeMuro had a defender for a while and made a few videos about it. Did a couple cross country trips in it. Search for his other vids
