I have a 2018 Discovery and it has been a great car. Same engine, same platform. Couple little things went bad like the hood release cable. Alternator went out at 65k miles, which I think is a little early, but alternators do that sometimes. They also fixed the rear hatch release as a recall but we had never had a problem with it.
Oil change is expensive at the dealer but we don't do them there. And you only need one every 16k miles so it pretty much averages out.
I have 68k miles, been a good car.
The thing that drives everyone crazy is the entertainment system. Seems like 90% of people complaining is because the entertainment systems will occasionally not turn on. Mine has done that a couple of times but it came back on when I re-started the car. The Meridian stereo is incredible so I just put up with it.
When I get rid of the car I will probably get a defender. They had issues the first year but I know about 10 people who have them and they all love them.
Last thing... I doubt I would own one living in Texas but in Colorado it comes in nicely. You just don't really get off of pavement in Texas, better off with a pavement queen like a Sequoia or Tahoe. Defenders/Discoverys are simply the best snow vehicle ever made, Texans don't need that.
Last consideration - mileage and power. I get 22 on a trip and 19 around town and this is in the mountains. When I hauled the travel trailer (6600 pounds) it dropped to about 10mpg. My previous car was a 4runner but it had zero power and really couldn't handle my driveway properly.
