I was unsure about posting this here, on OB, or Travel... but I settled here because the main trip is 4x4 shenanigans.

Heading to Moab, UT next week for about a week/week and a half. First 4-5 days are decently planned, but the later half is fairly open.

Never been to Moab before, but have been on most of the trails in SW CO and am pretty comfortable behind the wheel. Several others in our group have been previously, so they'll do the trail guiding.

Anything to be sure we see on our first visit?

Anything in town to hit or skip? Food, beer, wine, etc?

I did the Merrimack and Monitor trails. Fairly easy and beautiful trail and scenery.

Lots of good beer and food places in town. You really can't go wrong. I had lunch at Trailhead Public House.

Double check your planned routes. It looks like last week BLM closed many of the trails.

Yep, I saw that bull***** It looks like side by sides gave SUWA enough lobbying power to close the trails.

Not an off-road guy so nothing to add there.

Food - We enjoyed the Moab Diner. Just a nice diner in town.

Antica Forma was a nice italian food restaurant. Their pizza was delicious.

Both National Parks were stunning.

Schafer Trail in Canyonlands is something I am going to do in my FJ40 before I die. If you do it please post a few pics.

We went to Arches two summers ago and were given the advice of hiking dead horse state park. The state park is adjacent and gives great views of CanyonLands.

Best food we had were some tacos out of one of the food trucks.

Not to thread hijack but whens the best time of year to go? Best to plan to tent camp or is lodging readily available?

Post pics and a review after you get back!

We're tent camping 6 of our 8 nights - but might end up booking a couple extra hotel stays if the temps drop too much.

But yeah, I'll have to post pics when we get back.

Very cool! Reminds me of the road to Batopilas that I did in 2008 on a KLR and I would have enjoyed it more but I was worried about drunk drivers killing me while flying around the corners.

I sure would like too. That's if it doesn't petrify or grow roots in my shop.

Got home super late last night after an amazing trip with a great group of guys (and wives).

From DFW, we spent the night in Trinidad at The Inn at Pennington Place. Absolutely loved the place, my son loved roaming around the gardens, and it just felt safe. We'll be stopping there as a mid point between home and CO/UT.
Day two was up to Grand Junction to pick up my wife (she was working in another state and couldn't fly home before we left). I ended up going through Monarch Pass, but didn't realize they had their first major storm of the season that day. Road wasn't prepped nor plowed. Luckily, my tires didn't suck, and we could make it through.

You can't park there.

Wish I had stopped sooner; had a decent amount of ice/snow/slush buildup from the pass.
But we made it over and into Grand Junction after a slight delay - turns out my wife had been watching the Blue Angles practice, so she didn't mind.

The next morning, we met up with our group and prepped to start Poison Spider, then into Golden Spike, and others.

Photos never do the obstacles justice.

We got a permit and camped off Golden Spike for the Eclipse.

We finished Golden Spike/Eagles Dare/Waterfall and headed back to town.
Golden Crack was pretty neat. Not as much of a crawling challenge, but different than your normal "go up, don't roll" obstacle.

I did manage to break two CV's, and another guy lost his power steering, but these were not easy trails.

For refit and recovery, the families split up for a couple days. We headed to Canyonlands NP for some exploration and easy hiking.

Then we met back up and Gemini Bridges. This isn't a difficult trail, but the views (and the bridges) are beautiful.

I'm still getting photos from folks, so I'll add more as I get them, but this place was beautiful - and I can't wait to go back.

edit: We also did Hell's Revenge - I'll have to update once I get those pics.
