Wheel/Tire Size Impact to Real World Ride

Plenty of directional information on the internet about how lighter wheels, larger sidewalls, wider tires, etc. can change a car's handling but nothing really indicates what will be detectable when driving around town.

I'm buying a new car(mid-size commuter sedan so no performance considerations) and thinking about trying to trade the larger rims it comes with for slightly smaller rims from the trim level down but I can't decide if this will be worth the effort. Curious to hear some real world experiences.

Looking at going from a 245/40 R19 to a 225/55 R17 so same overall diameter, 0.7 inches narrower, and 2 inches less rim / more sidewall. Goal is to stick with an OEM set.

So I think it would make stopping distance worse but MPG, ride quality, and maybe vehicle wear all improve. But how much?!

My hunch is that going from 22s to 16s would be noticeable but 19s to 17s isn't worth the trouble?

Fine by me if this goes off the rails - I searched for a thread on the topic and only found off road and "will it fit" threads.

generally speaking.... less sidewall, firmer ride. more sidewall, softer ride.

if you live in Houston where some roads feel like you're in a horse and buggy, you might appreciate a bit more cushion

More sidewall also reduces the risk of bending a rim on a pothole. If you're in an area with pothole problems, that may be a concern.

I'd think it would be slight but noticeable. Just a bit less harsh.

I'm a big advocate for more sidewall and smaller rim diameter on trucks. It gives you more options and capabilities with your tires in doing various truck things. You do trade a bit less sharpness in handling.

I agree that 19 to 17 will be hard to notice.

Will a 17" wheel clear the brake calipers?

I'm pretty sure it will clear. Would be trading with someone who has the smaller wheels off the same car, drivetrain, etc. As far as I can tell the differences between trims are purely interior options and appearance related.

City potholes will kill 19s, ask me how i know. Def go for 17s if you can.

I went from a 22" wheel on my 1/2 ton pick up to a 20". There's a noticeable difference in ride and sound of the bumps - it's much smoother now. I don't feel a difference in stopping and starting. I much prefer the 20"
