Thoughts on Jeep Wagoneer or Grand Wagoneer?

Currently have a '21 Pallisade Caligraph but the family has grown so I'm looking to get something a little bigger with higher towing.

A Tahoe, Yukon or Escalade are also contenders. I am pulling a trailer that is 4,000 lb dry weight, but probably closer to 6k lbs by the time I'm done with it. I'd like to spend $60-80k and get something '21 or newer.

I didn't know much about the new wagoneers until I started shopping around. 10k lbs towing is the highest in this vehicle category. Also, the auto leveling air ride suspension seems nice. There seems to be a lot of reliability complaints. I'm not sure if I should take the gamble on such a new vehicle from a brand that isn't exactly known for its reliability.

Fugly. But that's my opinion.

There is a reason everyone buys a Tahoe. I'd want a couple more years to see how it holds up. I like the way it looks but they get expensive

Went down the road on this recently but haven't pulled the trigger.

I've got two friends that own one and I've shared before these thoughts. They really like the vehicle. Despite all the online articles that start by saying "its really big!!!" or "its starting price is more than its competitor", it actually compares really well with the existing large SUVs. It's not substantially bigger in a way that most people would notice. I've driven one of my buddy's a couple times and it drives smaller than it looks. I've only driven the hemi version which is now only an option on the base Wagoneer for 2023.

As for price, you get a lot more on a standard wagoneer than you do on a standard tahoe/expedition. Price a few out with the options you want and you'll option up the tahoe/expy to a price point that is equal or higher than the wagoneer in most cases.

Their biggest complaints were minor and it had to do with UConnect dropping connections. But they both agreed it was a minor issue.

The thing I noticed about it, especially for families, is that the rear space is well designed. With the bench seat in the middle, you get three seats that fold down, move forward and back, and recline. They also have the one press button that moves the outside seats forward with a carseat in them. Its a huge opening to get into the third row which has a ton of space. Plus, the underseat area of the second row is mostly open so you can put stuff (or lose stuff) under there.

I've seen a couple lately with the all terrain group (different tires/wheels, quadra-drive II) and they look good. Less gnarly than a Z71/AT4, but still cool looking.

Obviously none of this addresses the issue of long-term reliability. But most of the stuff I've seen online relates to the higher end tech on the Grand Wagoneer and the Series III features. If you look, there's not a lot of problems (yet) with the rest of the vehicle. But we'll see how long that lasts.

I may be the only owner on the board. Have owned ours since Jan of 2022. A few gremlins thus far but nothing crazy.

We have the Series III Wagoneer and I've done a ton of researching on these things as changes are being made to new MY and updates to service/software. Unfortunately, when these first came out, no dealership had any idea what was going on with these things. Part of the advantage to getting a Wagoneer is their "Wagoneer Client Service" - 5 free oil changes and rotations included on purchase - they'll pick up the car, service, wash it, and drop off. For free.

Luckily there's a good CDJR dealership near me for that.

Comparison between the GW and Wagoneer. GWs are PRICEY and you don't get that much more. Exact same size and mostly the same interior (to higher end wagoneer trims). You cannot delete the 2nd row console on the GW which was a nonstarter for us. The GW now has the twin turbo hurricane vs the 6.4L hemi. The 6.4L sounded awesome but got about 12MPG. Ours has the 5.7 hemi and we get about 16mpg (mostly city driving). We did get ~18 on a road trip to CO and back.

I'm not a fan of how the trims are categorized. You get less "choice" because only certain options come with certain trims. For example, the "all terrain" package can only come with certain levels. If you want the automated steps, you have to get the 22" rims. 360 camera package only comes with 1 trim addon. If you want the moon roof, you have to get the 22" rims, automatic steps, and upgraded sound system. So just keep that in mind as you go through a build.

Now, onto what I like and dislike...

Very easy and smooth driving vehicle. It's 4" longer than a tahoe but feels smaller and drives less like a truck (we test drove a new tahoe and my father has a new denali). The Hemi has plenty of get up.

Interior styling blows the similar GM products out of the water. Console, touch screen, knobs are much more streamlined. My dad's denali has about 50 knobs and buttons. The Wagoneer is very simple and looks great.

Third row sun roof is cool and the panoramic is nice.. tons of light when you've got all 3 open/unshaded. (third row doesn't open - just has a shade.

Due to the shape of the back (more square) and added length, there is significantly more space behind the third row than the tahoe or yukon. We've done long road trips with people int he third row and there's plenty of room for luggage in the back. Plus.. third row reclines!

As others have said, the flip/slide forward button on the captains chairs in the 2nd row are nice. Very easy in and out. Third row folds flat like others. We did a guys golf trip last year and I fit 8 sets of golf clubs, 2 coolers, and a few suitcases + 3 grown men in this thing.

We don't have the rear seat entertainment but it looks pretty slick - amazon fire tablets, basically, built in.

Overall, we really enjoy the car and it's everything we wanted. Plus, you can actually find them on lots (and get below MSRP now, I think). Good luck on even finding a tahoe or yukon. As others have said, with similarly optioned tahoes/yukons, these are about the same price. The "these are expensive!" notion was that early on, they only sold GWs and Wagoneer Series II and III with some more expensive options. If you go with a basic Series I, you can be in for under $60k I believe and it'll be more like a Yukon SLE/T or Chevy LT. A loaded Series III is basically a Denali, fully loaded (which are $90k+ now).

The bad: the Uconnect system was very buggy at first but has gotten better with OTA software and dealership updates. There's been a few software updates to lane assist that had to get worked out. We had to replace our lift gate assembly as it wasn't locking/unlocking appropriately. All covered by the dealership. Our headliner in the back had a few broken clips when we bought it (had a rattle). Replaced under warranty. Biggest thing that pissed me off when I bought it was the mirrors don't fold. $80k+ vehicle without folding mirrors. They have chosen small things to give the GW to make it feel nicer and this was one. Stupid in my opinion because you can get a 30k camry with folding mirrors.

Other than that, no issues (knock on wood). Happy to answer anything else.

I'm a Jeep person. I see no redeeming qualities in the Wagoneer.

Thank you for the great feedback.

I have 3 kids (age 2, 4, and 6). We do a long (~4-5k mi) road trip where we haul a travel trailer (21', dual axle, ~5-6k loaded weight). My god daughter (22 now) joins us for this trip so the extra seating in the 2nd row is a huge plus for us. I hate that as soon as you get away from the base model, most other full size SUV's switch to captain chairs. I am also a fan of the way the 2nd row folds such that a forward facing car seat can stay installed. Speaking of car seats, I like the idea of being able to have 3 car sets across the 2nd row while the 3rd row and is still accessible and usable/comfortable for an adult. I want to be able to accommodate the whole family, maybe add another 1 or 2 to our number or maybe a friend and still fit.

As far as pricing, I have found what you said to be true. The Tahoe, Yukon may start lower but as soon as you start adding options to get a similarly equipped Wagoneer, they are about equal. The Wagoneer definitely feels more luxurious and comparable to our Palisade Calligraphy (quilted leather panels, wood grain accents, color settable LED lighting accents, HUD, digital instrument cluster that conveniently shows blind spots when turn signal is activated, a very smooth lane departure assist that very easily drives the vehicle and even does higher banked turns, etc).

It does seem like a lot of the reliability issues are the less important widgets/gadgets that are easily fixable at the dealership. It seems like the 5.7L V8 hemi is a very proven engine, but that twin turbo hurricane engine offers promising fuel economy that might be worth it.

I felt like this at first as well but it has grown on me. Same thing with the tesla cybertruck (which I have a pre-order for).

Picked one up last month. Its a '23, Series II with the Advanced All Terrain Group. So far, so good. No fires yet.

Does it count as an auto board approved boost if its got twin turbos and is white?

you're going to be bumping up against payload on a 6k lb trailer (900lb tongue weight with WDH) plus 6 humans at maybe 650lbs? plus luggage.

you can get the bench in the Series II... not sure on the III.

It comes in the "convenience package" or whatever with the 22" rims, steps and moon roof. So I've got it.

Good sounding system. Doesn't get super loud but it's crystal clear with great quality.

I saw and talked to a guy pulling an airstream - 25' I believe with his Wagoneer Series II in Clayton, NM at that new Valero they built. We had a good chat about how he was liking it.

He said it pulled it like a dream and he was very pleased with the purchase. We had a few of the same issues when we first purchased ours but had been worked out.

For those talking expedition... the expy has considerable less room on the inside. It honestly feels like a smaller vehicle in class than the new tahoes and wagoneers. The reworking of the engine bay let the new tahoes add length to the cargo area.

I will say though, I do like it's drivetrain more than any of the other options besides the 3.0 duramax... those things are unicorns. I've only seen 3 in the wild, one of which is my father's.

It's technically an option but we just don't find it as sexy.

It's like the good hometown girl that goes to church every Sunday with her family, good student, etc but you're just not attracted to her. I'm sure she'll make a good wife, but looks matter.
AColunga07

We definitely considered and are still mildly considering this option. We find the interior a little lacking in terms of space.

I know 3 people with the new style Expeditions. 2 have had transmissions replaced under 100k miles, and the 3rd has had myriad electrical / sensor problems galore.

Anecdotal, obviously.

Rented a Grand Wagoneer series III for a week in Colorado. It looks great and interior is better their our 18 Escalade platinum(not my wife's opinion of course - Escalade is hers). No way I would own one long term. Not saying much since Same for a GM or Ford ecoboost vehicle these days.

Drove great and felt very luxurious. Not sure what engine I had but the GM 6.2L felt better to me. I did have a problem with the air conditioner. After yelling at my wife to fix it as I drove up the mountains I then pulled over. Turned the car off and then on again and all was good the rest of the way.

I'll also add interior much roomier than GM vehicles, even the additional room in the redesign I think
