Any idea what the going rate to install a 14-50 plug in a garage, considering it has to go on the opposite wall from the breaker panel? Likely will go up/over via the attic above the garage?

I've got a quote from referral, just want to see if anyone else has had it done.

You mean how much money, or how much crap you'll get from the Never EV Crowd?

Materials are sky high right now. 6/3 romex cable is $7-8 per foot. The breaker, outlet, and other misc hardware won't be more than $50 or so. From there just add on whatever is reasonable for labor (can't help there).

Yeah, The cost of the copper is going to be the biggest deal. If you are just going across your garage consider yourself lucky.

I'd guess probably 500 ish bucks for everything except the copper. Add 6+ dollars a foot for the actual cabling. It shouldn't take an elec-chicken longer than an hour to do this.

haha sorry to disappoint but not my car! I doubt I'll ever drive an EV.

If you need to, you can rag on me for driving a Ram!

I bought the charging station myself and had it installed by an electrician that charged me about $500. He installed a 50A breaker and had to run about 40' of wire. The charging station is hardwired, so no outlet installed. I'm in SW Houston

The quotes I received were between $400 - $1,500.

As someone who works in Engineering for a big electric utility, don't be surprised when the utility starts to regulate/control EV charging. We & other utilities are already seeing the increased peak load demand, reduced reserve margins, voltage instability, overloaded transformers from EV charging. Wouldn't shock me in future to see EV owners required to have a ATO switch installed between the utility and home charging station.

How will they know we are charging?

Most utilities including the one I work for we have Sentient intelligent sensors on both OH and URD distribution. The sensor show current, voltage, faults on both primary and secondary side. If I run a report at your transformer I can tell you exactly what your doing and when your doing it

How is it different than an HVAC unit? Or two of them at the same time?

Good white paper on it to read. It's too much to type.

I bet the governments that are all in on EV's will totally allow public and regulated utilities to hamper charging.

I bet the government, which is all in on reducing energy consumption, will totally use public and regulated utilities to hamper charging.

And if I had to install a switch behind my charging station I'd just plug it into the dryer connection

Good luck. We can plug in to basically any outlet from 15a to 50amp.

Eh, it would be completely doable without your consent. A software update to your vehicle would suffice to report on it, and enroll it in a compliance system. Especially for cars like Tesla where you can't really disconnect it from Tesla's central management. If the gov decided to require this, they could, and you couldn't really exclude yourself from it.

This will likely happen. They could also go this route to implement an EV tax for road maintenance costs, to replace the gas tax revenue they're not getting anymore from vehicles that don't use gas.

Many states already have an EV tax to make up for this. It ranges from $50 to $200 a year. I'll live. Though I do enjoy this latest "you EV owners will be sorry one day" thread again for the 100th time.

Nobody said anything like that in this thread, you're just paranoid and defensive about it. Carry on

I had a 50 amp plug added next to my panel and a 20 amp dedicatedgfi for my new freezer to the tune of $575. Not apples to apples I know but I think it should be a little over half that number you quoted.

Is that to run the wire through the wall/attic or can you run through a conduit along the wall for cheaper? I will need to add another outlet in my garage if I get an EV but it's pier & beam so it can be easily run under the floor.
LeftyAg89

Yes ours has to go up the wall into the attic, then across the 2-car garage, and back down the opposite wall, and I would assume some sheetrock work and painting.

Got another "rough" estimate for $750 but he hasn't been out to see what actually would be needed.
