Some of you may recall that I blew the OE 4L60e in racetrok shortly after the 5.3 swap and I had another 60e built. That transmission lasted about 2 years before I broke it.

Fast forward 9 years and I'm needing to rebuild transmission in my '06. Rather than pulling that trans and waiting for it to be rebuilt, I dropped off the built 4L60e that I broke. For some reason I had it in my mind that it was a 4L65e, turns out it's not. Only thing salvageable from it are the billet servos lmao

I feel the pain. Torque converter slipped out yesterday while bolting up my 4l65 and I ended up shattering the pump rotor. At least it was a slightly cheaper fix.

4l80 time for you! I saw an 100k mile LQ9 w/4x4 4l80 in Irving this weekend for $1400. I nearly made the drive up there. I would have thrown both in my rig

No 80e for my 06, it's going to be everyday driver after the 60e goes in. I'm not trying to totally kill fuel economy lol

Builder is just going to snag a core tomorrow and build it.

I think any fuel economy savings is out the window when you're on transmission rebuild #3

Is that a crack or a vent?

First rebuild for this truck

I picked up the transmission on Thursday, $1150 for a built trans and $50 for the core.

I picked it up the day between my Mobile/NOLA jobs and PAT job. Left PAT yesterday and now in Ensenada, Mexico. Needless to say that work is hectic and I'm unsure when it'll be underneath the truck rather than inside it.

Work and life has continued to get in the way of the transmission replacement. I think hauling ass to the vet yesterday drove the final nail into the current 4L60e.

Was leaving the Port of Houston where the entrance ramp is going up the incline of the 610 Ship Channel Bridge. Transmission was stuck in gear and slipping all the way up, so I immediately exited. Now hanging out In Manchester, just outside the Valero Refinery, waiting on the tow truck lol

You're the best person I know to ask--I've always been a Ford guy. I may buy a 2004 Silverado (5.3, Z71) with about 170,000 miles. Assuming it has the 4L60E?

Anything specific to look out for when test driving? Estimated cost to rebuild and/or replace if it goes out?

Yes, it has a 4L60e. You can ask if it has been rebuilt, but it's not that much of a difference if it has. A vette servo ($30) and a Hayden 679 trans cooler ($60) will help it last. I wouldn't spend more than $1400 on rebuild itself I imagine labor for a 4x4 is at least $700. Slipping or delayed shifts is a good indicator that trans is on its way out.

Aside from the transmission, ensure the gauges work. If not, it's about $250 to have cluster completely rebuilt. Listen/feel for the rear brakes dragging. You can touch the wheel to determine if one side is hotter than the others.

Generally speaking, they're very easy to work on and easy to diagnose with all the info out there on them. I fully support the purchase of GMT800s lol
