New Truck or Replace Transmission

I've got a 2013 F150 that has been a great truck but had the transmission blow last week. 195,000 miles.

It threw error codes P0720 and P0722. My mechanic is quoting me $5900 for a reman transmission (edit: forgot that t r a n n y is banned on TA) installed.

I don't put a ton of miles on the truck now as my wife has a newish Expy Max that we drive 95% of the time. I typically put about 5,000-10,000 miles a year on it as it's my commute vehicle (~20 miles round trip) and then occasionally use it to go skiing/hunting.

The plan was to keep it for another 2-3 years until we got my wife's Expedition paid off, then get a new one. But obviously this threw a wrench into those plans. I feel like if I'm gonna upgrade it in a couple years, paying $6000 for a new ****** isn't a smart move. Thoughts?

I would say it depends on the condition of your F150. If it's mint and you like it then I'd replace the trans. I don't know your exact model but a brand new trans for an STX 5.0 2wd or 4wd on fairwayfordparts.net is $3,261.38 plus shipping so $5900 for a reman sounds way high. New trucks are just so stupid expensive now

Yeah I guess some facts on the truck...

Not mint since it's a 10 year old truck, but it's in great condition interior and exterior aside from small minor dents and scratches.

I did think that was a little high as well, but I called up AAMCO and they quoted $7200 over the phone. Though they are looking to see if they can find a used/salvage transmission to throw in there. I'm in Oregon, so prices will be a little higher than back in Texas I'm guessing.

Just had this done on my 08 F150 for a little under $2400 in Houston. I'd shop around some more, but like you said, I assume being on the left coast it's just going to be more expensive.

Why are they saying it needs a rebuild? Did they actually diagnose those codes? P0722 is set when P0720 is set. Both codes are related to 0 RPM detected from output speed sensor. Ford's pinpoint tests say focus on wiring, the OSS sensor, PCM, or transmission solenoids in that order. Nothing about a full rebuild.

You should be in limp mode with those codes - so max line pressure and defaulted to 5th gear. Clearing the codes should temporarily get it back into normal driving mode. If it drives normally after codes are cleared, and the fluid isn't burnt, I'd get a second opinion. If you're telling shops you think you need a new transmission, stop. They're going to keep quoting you a rebuild because they make way more money that way. Make them actually diagnose the codes and don't lead them down a path.

Well, that's pretty interesting. Appreciate the advice.
It does go into limp mode but then drives normally for about 20ish miles after a code reset.

It throws a misfire code as well, I think, which isn't surprising since the spark plugs are overdue for a change. But I don't think those are related. I may clear it and get a second opinion.

I did hear back from AAMCO and they found a ****** with 135K miles on it that they could put in for $3000.

2013 F150 has (had?) an extended service program from Ford that would replace the transmission lead frame. Look up "Customer Satisfaction Program 19N01."

A bunch of trucks fall under this, but you may have busted their mileage limit. The faulty part is the transmission lead frame which is a ~$500 part that sits on top of the valve body in the transmission pan. It's invasive, but not a transmission rebuild.

My 2013 threw both of those codes back in August last year, went into limp mode (and sometimes wouldn't shift out of first gear), and wouldn't show me speed or mileage whenever the code set. Specifically, P0720 means your output shaft speed sensor is busted and the whole lead frame has to be replaced.

Problem was the lead frames were on national back order when mine died (something like 10,000 on back order nationally, 3 trucks including mine needed that part at the dealership that fixed mine). I waited almost a month to get my truck back. New lead frame and back to normal.

If those are your transmission codes, I would get another opinion.

That's exactly what mine is doing (not showing speed and odometer) which I guess makes sense with P0720.

I'll take it to get a second opinion tomorrow.

Even if it was a blown transmission (which it sounds like its not) you would only have to keep that truck running for 6-8 more months on the road to come out ahead of a new car monthly payment.

Also a 2013 F150, if you've kept up with it, will still have some resale value with these stupid car prices right now.

As a side note, who is buying new cars and keeping these prices sky high?

Get this fixed first. My Excursion was throwing OSS codes. Problem eventually turned out to be a bad coil causing the random code to be thrown (I was eventually told that a failing coil can cause sensor issues due to stray voltage). Eventually the misfire became noticeable and threw a misfire code. Changed the coil and all went away.

You need to fix it anyway, so do it first before chasing the other.

The speed sensor is typically the lead frame. I bought my 2013 expedition had 149900 miles and it was over 150000 when it threw the code, which the warranty was extended to. Would not budge on it. All quotes were above 2k to fix. Parts hard to come by but one showed up on ebay with the felt insulator for $700, about what they cost from dealer when you can get them and a few hours on my back, a filter and it works fine now. About 40k additional miles without issues. 1700 labor for replacement is a total ripoff. Mine did not have the pcm flash and it would downshift to 1st no matter what speed you were traveling. It was not pretty.

My wife had a 2006 Honda car, and had to replace the transmission in 2009.
