We need to start treating car thieves like cattle rustlers in the Old West. Shoot them or hang them when caught. Do it enough and the problem will end.
Hell, if they would just CATCH THEM and the apply the existing laws it would stop.

They don't even catch them.

But to your point, I think we are going to see a LOT more vigilante justice in the coming years. We have finally reached a boiling point with all things in the world.

There isn't anyone that hasnt had something stolen from them. I could turn a blind eye any time.

You likely won't want it back. I had a car stolen and recovered on the side of the road, and it was trashed (dents on the outside; alcohol, cigarettes, clothes, condoms (gross) on the inside). Got it fixed by insurance and sold it.
My sister had this happen to her truck. Bunch of used condoms, bong, meth, a confederate flag switchblade, and other random redneck stuff. They repaired and sold immediately.

It seems like the car manufacturers could devise a system for locating the vehicle that cannot be disabled. I don't mean by hiding it, I mean protect it in a way it takes a very long time to disable it. Put the locater in a solid metal box that is a pain in the ass to get to. Run the wires so they are not easily cut. Have the locater powered by a battery back-up that will last for a few days. Or is this all too much to ask?

The auto manufacturers would only be reducing sales if they did that. No motivation on their end to prevent thefts.

This. Can we also add trash dumpers on rural roads to this list?

Very tinfoil hat of me but do they want to make it harder to steel a vehicle? I mean step 1 wouldn't be too hard, make it harder to disable the horn. Every one of these thieves disables the horn before breaking in to avoid more attention.

As I said, in early 2020 I knew 3 people who had their vehicles stolen within a month of each other (2 Tahoe's and 1 Silverado). All 3 replaced it with the exact same vehicle....

Here's a 10 million dollar idea: a device that replaces the pigtail that plugs into the factory horn. Make it look stock, hell make it out of junkyard parts, this pigtail, when unplugged or cut, sets off an excruciatingly loud siren tucked up under the firewall (or mustard gas... whatever you're into). A second factory horn could be plugged into the harness and located somewhere inconspicuous. Bet such a thing could be produced for well under $100

This. I had a civic si stolen years ago and I was sweating leading up to the 3 week time period where they would pay me out....then Katrina hit and I had to wait 5-6 weeks for my check.

Insurance companies can make them too expensive to insure. They look at all that data when they are determining rates.

Man, I had an 00 Si stolen back in 06. Found it after a month and there was nothing left. Took an extra month to get my check, which really sucked because it happened just a couple months after graduating and I was more broke then than when I was in school.

Several months later I saw it again but it was put back together with all the stolen parts. I confronted the guy driving it, a cop got involved, and the cop told me I'd have to prove the guy chopped it, dumped it, bought it back and reassembled.

Man.. sorry to hear that.

My 2020 gmc was stolen in November. Got a call in Jan that they found it. Some guy in S Texas thought he got the deal of a lifetime on Facebook. Bought a 2020 GMC AT4 with 60k miles on it for $30k cash.

He took it in to the dealership to get serviced and they had an issue that lead to them finding out it was mine. Truck had a new VIN and Title but somehow traced back to me. By that time it was a total loss and I already had a new truck. Real pain in the ass..

At the time of my truck being stolen there were 1700+
gMC, 750 Fords, and 400 dodges that had been stolen in Houston in 2022.

I loved my GMC but won't buy another

No but I hope thief's start employing this instead of smashing the window or jimmying the lock. Will save lots of collateral damage.

My nephew used to have a Chevy Trailblazer similar to this one. You see on the back door, the rear portion of the window that doesn't roll down? Well, you pull on the weather stripping and it swings open like it's on a hinge. Reach in, unlock, the steal from the vehicle. My nephew caught a guy breaking into his that way. Guy took of before he got too much of a hurt put on him.
