Anyone ever been? Do they really guarantee it in 10 minutes?

I use them all the time for both of our vehicles. Been going for several years now. Very fast every time I have been.

The total amount of time spent there is dependent on if there is a line. Once you are in the bay, it's typically 5-10 minutes.

One just opened near me.

I do not want to mess with the skid plate on my truck, so I do not do my own. Also no Fumoto valve available.

I will continue to take it to the dealer. If anything gets screwed up, they're the only ones that have touched it.

Gotcha. So in theory, you might wait an hour, but when you're in the bay it's only 10 minutes.

Yeah I give no consideration to stupid gimmick guarantees like that. They always give themselves an out.

But in my dozens of experiences there the total visit is fast. Maybe 20 minutes at most. I've never waited behind more than one vehicle.

Not sure speed would be the metric I would consider for an oil change, but if they do meet the more important metrics then it might be decent tie-breaker.

10 min oil change? I'm picturing the hitchhiker scene from Theres Something About Mary

I guess I understand wanting to get it done fast, but for a lot of cars, the oil change is the only time a mechanic will get to take a look at it all year long. Personally, I'd consider it like a yearly checkup with your doctor or something and let a shop take a look. They might just catch other issues you haven't noticed.

I only go there for state inspections. They don't check squat and you get to stay in your vehicle.

A BS process for a BS government requirement.

I go to the one by my house in Katy for inspections. Tried them for an oil change a few months ago and it was an epic failure. The guy spilled oil all over the engine bay of my truck. That sucked, but what irritated me was he was not planning to go get more to top it off since he spilled so much. I had to ask him to do it. Then he spent close to 30 minutes cleaning everything up and did a crap job. I will never go back for an oil change.

5 minutes for the oil change, 5 weeks in the shop repairing the damage they'll do

Based on what? Shouldn't take more than 10 minutes to change oil if you have 2 guys doing it at a shop set up for it. You're telling me the best mechanic you know can't do a proper oil change in 10 minutes?

If you know take 5 does a bad job then please post what you know. The concept is fine.

The thing is, many will "find" problems that must be addressed immediately our your car will blow up at the next stop sign. I'm going to Rule 1 soon, and I've already decided I'm done taking my vehicles to get the oil changed. I'm tired of getting it done and them come out and try to upsell me on everything. I did my own oil changes on my old truck and it was running like the day I drove it off the lot when Ol' Boy decided he sat at the stop light long enough and wanted to get t-boned. Truck had 165k miles on it.

It also gives me a reason to get a bigger jack and impact wrench.

No car I've ever owned or serviced was finished draining oil in 5-8 minutes. They are changing most of your oil, but not all of it. These are the type of places that cause the issues highlighted on the thread with the Hyundai needing a new engine. Find an independent mechanic you trust for other repairs and major service and take it to them for the oil changes too. It will be more expensive and less convenient, but if mistakes are made they will be much more likely to make it right since you are a regular customer.

You need an impact for your oil drain plug???

Tire rotation. I have my tires rotated with every oil change, and a 4-way sucks.

But yeah, I can see where most of this board perked up and grabbed the popcorn.

That's what these shops likely use!

Last time I went to Take 5 was right before the pandemic. 2018 Honda Accord Touring 2.0 - headed home that evening North on 281 in the Bulverde/Spring Branch area the little metal plate that protects the filter and oil pan area drops and starts scraping the asphalt. I managed to pull over and get to hold long enough to make it the last few miles home. Haven't been back.

edit: not that it matters, but this was the one in Alamo Heights. I'm sure they've turned over staff there multiple times since.

My son usually does his own but recently got his oil changed there and they put the filter cover on so tight he couldn't remove it. He took it back and they refused to loosen it because he'd touched it. They did tell him a tool to use to get it loose.

Went there week before last in Tomball to get a State inspection in a work truck. I sat in the truck and watched them working on the car ahead of me. The guy steps outside, grabs the squeegee and goes to work cleaning the windshield of the car in the bay. I watched this, while my windshield wipers slapped vigorously back and forth.

I get in and tell them I need a state inspection. He scanns the VIN, punches on his computer, looks at me and says, "diesel?" and I reply that it is a diesel. He punches some more on his computer, and "That will be $7." Never touched the truck, never walked around it, never asked me to honk...

Phillips head through the lower side of the can, then use as a torque lever to remove.

Won't work for his car. He us a VW Golf and the filter is in a housing but the filter itself isn't the typical metal cylinder like every other car I've had. The housing is reusable.

Got it. Yeah my idea won't work. Almost all Toyotas are like that now too.

He has a cartridge filter. It should have a raised area on the top for a 32mm wrench or you can get a fluted cartridge wrench. Can't say I've ever been able to take a cartridge filter cap off by hand but I have the hand strength of a 1yr old girl

That's exactly what he has and what 5m told him to go buy to loosen the cover that they WAY over tightened. I have good hand strength and has no hope of breaking it loose.

Took my f150 there once, waiting in the vehicle sucked because it was August (didn't think about that ahead of time, lol). Took wife's car there once, but they said they didn't stock a filter for a jetta. So, haven't been back, since I sold the truck and got a tesla

When did this become a thing? I have a place run by 'a dude' where I live. It's like a drive through paperwork mill. You drive in, show him your insurance, he prints the paper and you pay and drive off. No one looks at jack ***** Cats gone, no emissions, my diesel exhausts the CCV out the rear behind the cab like my 1976 International tractor.....zero f--- given. It's like the only requirement is that it come in under it's own power. This may be a holdover from COVID and if so, it's a good one.

While I never have ever had someone else do my oil, I am not sure I agree with this statement:

Quote:

No car I've ever owned or serviced was finished draining oil in 5-8 minutes. They are changing most of your oil, but not all of it. These are the type of places that cause the issues highlighted on the thread with the Hyundai needing a new engine.

The fact is that by modern standards, everyone changes oil way sooner than it needs to be changed. If you are draining oil until it drips rapidly, there is not going to be a measurable difference vs. my oil changes where I let it drain for half a day on my pit while I do something else. I'd bet most people change oil every 7,000 miles or so and if that's the case, and they are using quality oils, they have a few thousand miles left in that oil. You'd have to have a lab test that but I would put all of my Monopoly money on it.

I am still in agreement that 'speed' is not the metric I want my maintenance or repair work done under.
