So I test drove both the Outlander SEL and Eclipse Cross SEL with her today at lunch. She's set her cap. She prefers the Eclipse Cross and I liked the room and HD cluster on the Outlander, but it's hers so whatever.

I see no real reason to veto what she wants, so assuming I buy her an Eclipse Cross in the next few days, anybody got experience with one? FWIW, I actually liked the one we drove. This is where I learn that the CVTs all explode 1 mile out of warranty or something.

I always assumed they were the Japanese Chrysler. The folks that I see driving them usually don't look like they'd qualify for financing elsewhere.

I don't see many Mitsu's on the road. I don't know anybody who owns one. Not even a friend of a friend.

I've always wondered who these folks are that drive the rare Mitsubishi on the road.

They used to make fairly good one-way planes, if you know what I mean.

I honestly wonder how they stay in business. But you see a lot of their old cars on the road still, so while unexciting, they must be pretty decently reliable.

I'd ask for an extended test drive.

She honestly likes and prefers this car for whatever reason. The only one she likes more is the Jag and the Mercedes. And because she was marrying material all those years ago, she has a bit of practicality in that this one is half the price of those.

I will refrain from car choice shaming, because everyone's tastes are different. I had no idea that Mitsubishi was still selling cars in the US. I also know nobody who owns one, so I have nothing to add.

My boss just traded in her 2 year old low-mileage Outlander for a used Honda Passport and is thrilled. The Outlander had so much plastic she had issues with wind on highways and plastic noise. It had been in the shop several times, the last being a broken gas cap preventing her from refueling.

At the end of the day, just make sure it has a decent warranty.

Mitsubishi is a gigantic company. They build ships, and forklifts, and cranes, and TV's, and Air Conditioners, and even car parts for every other manufacturer.

There's nothing wrong with Mitsubishi. They just make absolutely stupid amounts of money from heavy industries to really worry about the measly automotive market. Especially in the US.

My wife had a 2012 Mitsubishi Galant, I drove it to Louisiana and it was one of the worst put together cars I've ever been in. That being said it Never left her stranded and her brother is still driving it. May want to check out the Subaru Ascent pretty good middle ground in the midsize suv market.

I recall it wasn't too long ago they gave thought to get out of the states for selling vehicles.

Subaru from 2012 and up with the 2.5i motor or the 3.6 are pretty great cars these days. The old 2.5 (no i) were OK, but had plenty of issues that would nickle and dime you to death.

I've driven the Outlander for rentals, and it was a mess on the highway. No power and terrible road noise. Was definitely fuel efficient though.

But can't comment on maintenance and everything else except for the fact that the easily accessible cat was stolen on the rental I had a few weeks ago. Dropped it back off with AVIS and it was their problem to handle.

Sure she doesn't prefer Subaru?

Rode in an outlander during an Uber ride a few months ago and the thing did not track well on the highway (could have been wrecked, not sure) and the driver said the cats had been stolen once and she caught someone trying to steal the replacements as well.

She may have been representative of the people who buy ****subishis or maybe not... I guess you'll find out.

Sticker on the outlander is 37 and change. The Eclipse cross is cheaper around 31. I don't have any experience with them other than I see quite a few on the road.

This thread has been very eye opening, especially as pertains to regional American differences in car markets. We have aggressive winters in mountainous terrain. Most dudes drive 4wd trucks and most ladies are in something AWD. Subaru has a massive market here, and not just for the women who like women.

There is actually a Mitsubishi dealership near me, might have the cheapest new car on the market, they advertise crazy "show me a $5 bill and your credit is approved" type ads, and I want to say offer a 30 year warranty of some type - so you know what their niche is.

Back in the early 2000's I was stationed at a customer site, out of state, for a year and for a long time had a rental Mitsubishi Diamante. So glorious to say - MIT-su-BISH-ee di-AH-mon-tay. Always used it like a fake brag, this was the era of Will Ferrell screaming "I drive a dodge stratus!!!". I had an accident involving a BMW and the BMW had a bumper scrape while the Diamante bumper crumpled.
