This is my sock I created just for this purpose. I'm a regular poster here, but this is going to have too much identifying information.

In the Cypress area.

White, 2002, dual exhaust.

It has two decals on the back window, the US flag that is greyed out with the red stripe, and the same with the blue stripe.

They are located in the bottom corners of the rear window, I forget which side was which color.

There is another sticker on the top of the window, but I forget what it was.

Only owned it 9 days. Super sucks that it was stolen.

Paper tags: [will update tomorrow].

I realize that this is a shot in the dark, and the bed of my truck is likely already toting around illegals, but it's worth posting.

You post this on the OB? They could find Waldo and Carmen San Diego shacked up in a Motel 6 if they wanted.

I'd bet a weeks salary that whomever you bought it from had an extra key he didn't tell you about and took the truck back.

Yeah man. That'd be my guess as well..

Who created the tag for you? Dealer or individual?

Reason I ask is that is not a valid temporary buyers tag number nor a correct sequence.

It was one of those small shop used car dealers. The guy seemed pretty legit. I asked him to fix up a few things to get the price that he wanted, and he told me it would be better for me to take it to a mechanic I trusted to get the things fixed, but he would pay for it if his guy quoted a similar price.

Also, I was at a hotel when it was stolen, he couldn't have known where the truck was that night.

I also still owe him about 25% of the purchase price. He was really worried I wasn't going to pay off the rest.

I still think it is being used by a cayote. If that's the case, these things usually turn up pretty much totaled within a couple of months.

He had a tracker in that truck and struck while the iron was hot (parked at a hotel). Total inside job. Maybe not him but an employee. All those vehicles have trackers.

That sounds plausible. A lot of these dealers hardwire trackers in the vehicle.

IF that's true, and IF its even remotely possible that the dealer is involved, the police would be all over this. It is a bit more than just one man's stolen car.

Assuming this case has been assigned to anyone in the department, I'd say its worth a phone call to ask, "hey, I got a weird whiff of something: is that tag number legit? If not, can you look at the dealer I got it from?"
Stat Monitor Repairman

So the vehicle was financed by the small dealer extending you credit.

If thats the case, its almost guaranteed that they had a hardwired tracker in the vehicle.

I could see that happening.

The dealer never process the new title or the new registration.

Finds the vehicle by gps and repossesses it. Sells it again for export.

Was the vehicle insured?

Small dealers repossess their cars all the time. They really aren't car dealers as much as high interest loan shops with a car as collateral.

Was the dealership in Cypress?

If you want to email me the plate number I can see if it's legit

Yea the tag originally posted was not a valid dealer purchase tag. First off it wasn't registered as a buyers tag and it missing a letter so either way it was no bueno.

I can't get the paper plate number until Monday, unfortunately. I have to go down to a Sheriff sub station and show an ID.

I'm not sure how I got the wrong plate number from the deputy.

The dealership was kinda between Tomball and Spring.

The truck was not insured. One of the reasons I buy older vehicles with cash is because full coverage with 2 teenage drivers is wickedly expensive.

Any of you guys use any of these hard wired trackers? I have a couple of irreplaceable vehicles that I want to secure.

Not insured at all? Not even liability?

Had liability of course.

Sheriff just called "vehicle was recovered". Won't tell me condition.

I will keep Texags up to date as information comes in.

It is apparently "in the investigative lab". I assume they are looking for drugs. I expect the dash to be totally jacked up.

I use Spot Trace on my trailer. it is not hard wired, but notifies me 1-2 times a year when I need to change the batteries. It is not the best setup, but it mostly works. I think the service is $120/year.

I bought some of the Apple trackers and also keep one hidden on the same trailer. I also have one on a Ford I would want back if stolen. This setup is not great, or maybe I just haven't set it up correctly. Lots of beeping and phone notifications. But they were fairly cheap.

Everyone should at least hide an Apple Air Tag in their cars. At least if the thieves have an iPhone it will alert them that there is an air tag "with" them, and maybe make them ditch it. They arent GPS, but they ping off other apple products nearby.

It's a 2002 Dodge Truck, the dash would be totally jacked up even if it wasn't stolen.

If you get an alert of an air tag with you, I thought it gives you the option to turn off the air tag.

I put airtags in my luggage and can tell if it's in the plane with me. Not that I can do anything about it.

If a thief steals a car with an airtag inside, it will notify them that an airtag is following them. It will then give them an option to turn the airtag off (to prevent stalkers from hiding them in a person's purse). So how is it a good option for theft recovery?

So does everybody on the plane get a message that your air tag is following them and have the option to turn it off?

Not that I know of. I've been able to track it through many flights, domestically and aboard. Unless that's a recent option, say less than 2 weeks.

We have an airtag in my daughter's flute case, and it spent the last month in Houston being repaired. We tracked it from the repair shop in Houston, to FedEx and back to the local shop. Nobody turned it off or anything.

Would be great to have an AirTag on your car, just to call the police and have them yawn and gleek on your face through the phone when you tell them you're tracking the car ask you speak.

I don't think you can turn the AirTag off. You can stop it from logging your own phone, however, as I understand it. It knows where it is, but stops noting it is connected to and moving in conjunction with a particular device that broke connection.

Blue star for using the word gleek which I haven't heard in several decades.
