We can't find anything that doesn't have $2k - $5k market adjustment added to MSRP. That would put him far upside down which he hates.

Upside down means he owes more than it's worth. With used cars selling higher than new MSRP you're not necessarily upside down due to market adjustments. Buying with $0 down and 72+ month loans is how you get upside down. It's got to take years to unwind the supply chain issues.

That said, aggiepaintrain has a Toyota hookup if he's willing to go Toyota. $250 over msrp

Round Rock Toyota does not add market adjustment. Just ordered a Highlander that will be in next week. Once they get a periodic allocation, you can pick one out of that allocation, or they can swap a vehicle from another dealer's allocation, then you put a deposit down and the vehicle will arrive in approximately 4 weeks.

I know someone that bought a VW Taos in Houston with no market adjustment. I can't remember which dealer though. If he wants a VW, I will get more info.

Looks like he may be getting a jetta at MSRP plus $300 Vin etch (ugh) at VW Cypress on 290. Pretty painless so far.

I do in fact understand what upside down means. $5k over MSRP on a car in the low to mid 20s when he's putting down 2500 will certainly put him upside down, and in a bigger way than paying MSRP would.

I'm not confident in any way that the car market will remain this fubar for years.

Jetta is one of the top 10 fastest depreciating cars on the market. You'll learn what upside down actually means soon enough.

Someone needs to bump this in a couple years when they are begging for a bailout.

Deal fell through anyway, will share details if if anyone wants them.

He's talking about dealerships begging for bailout. The VW deal falling through is better for you. I'm trying to get out of mine asap because it seems it's about to start doing German car things.

Got it, thanks, sorry to earlier poster. I'm in a bad mood after the deal falling through. Sales process was fine but F&I guy majorly screwed up to the point that my son (who acted like a BOSS) walked on the deal. I was super proud of him but it's back to square one.

Beck and Masten has been buying new Tellurides from other dealers and selling them as used for way over new prices.

Unit was in transit. Fine. It was a manual jetta, my son ready to buy it. Agree to numbers, etc. They say it's overdue from the port so should arrive any day.

Get back to finance and they expect him to sign contract as of today. I kicked myself for not anticipating this, but contract date is today, payment due in 45 days, they were going to take his full down payment..... even if the car doesn't arrive for 2, 3, 4 weeks. He's supposed to be paying interest for the whole time that car is in transit. They admit it was due at the dealership on JULY 2nd!! This car is lost in shipping!

So we start pushing for some assurance about how long this will take and what happens if it doesn't arrive "any day". F&I dewshbag acts like this is totally unreasonable but I force him to admit that my son would be out his down payment and fronting all the risk, dealership bears no responsibility. The only thing the guy will offer is verbal assurance that if the car doesn't show up in those 45 days, they would void the contract.

He acted like the dealer had no other options. I was like, "you can take a deposit, call him when the car comes in, he'll sign the contract at that time. It's your dealership policy preventing that."

They refuse, F&I ass hole says passive aggressive things about how he used to like working on Mondays (he's mad because it's after hours at this point and he didn't sell any warrantee crap to us), so my son says "okay, thanks, give me a call when it comes in" and we walked out.

Salesman was still there and actually was really cool about it. He understood and said he wouldn't have signed either.

Hopefully all that makes sense. Tl/dr version: wanted my son to start paying today on a car that may or may not arrive in the near future. Screw that.

Don't let your haste to buy a new car force you to make a bad decision. Go talk to Aggiepaintrains's contact at Toyota and have someone shoot straight with you.

https://texags.com/forums/46/topics/3044973

Find a another way for your son to get around until it comes in or pay the premium for instant gratification. That's the market right now. If you only put $2500 down, you will be upside down on any car for a period of time but if you keep the car the duration of the loan, it should not matter. Get the right car!!

Y'all aren't kidding about market adjustments being crazy. I talked to a dealership this morning who is marking up some models almost 25% - even for cars that are "in transit."

Costco's car buying program still works for some make/models. I almost used it for a 2021 Highlander but ended up getting something else.

But there is not a lot to chose from anymore. Used to be you could find almost any make/model but now only a few are even 'available' on their car buying web site.

Avoid that mark up by ordering from a reputable dealer and wait a period of time. This board has good connections with Ford, Toyota. We heard good things about Sewell. I worked a deal for a new Lexus GX for my aunt. No markup and limited add ons for tinted windows. Took 3 months to come in but it was a good experience with no surprises.

We helped our parents find a car after their German made suv became unreliable. Went to Fred Haas on 45 in Spring to look. Low and behold they had one that was ordered but they could not reach the guy for a week. They offered it to us. No mark up. They drove it home that day. It was the end of the month. They were eager to sell it.

I ordered a Telluride paying MSRP and had it shipped to Sterling Kia in Bryan after trying to deal with Beck and Masten.

I'm willing to wait or go out of town if it saves me money. I'm looking at Corollas, Elantras, and Fortes, and I can afford to walk if I don't want to deal with markups.

Based on a lot of phone calls and several dealer visits, elantra is near impossible right now. You can get Forte at MSRP through Fort Bend Kia but expect 4 month lead time according to the sales Mgr. Van Griffith Kia in Granbury has $800 tint/maint package but he said they get some "free allocation" (ie not spoken-for) Fortes about 3 times per month.

I think you may be able to get a corolla pretty soon if that's what you want.

Troll Faceborg marketplace for a wine aunt selling a Toyota or Honda. Then pay a mechanic to do a full scan and body check.

Best deals right now are just as always: single owner direct sale.

Yep, pretty sure that's a Keating store so it will *at least* have an Apex added to it.

Allegedly they have four SELs on the lot and more coming in on August 20th.
