Saw the video of it arriving to giga TX and it isn't even 6 ft tall. It's like a large sedan with a "bed"

I am just surprised. I was hoping it would be more like a full size pickup.

I'm sure I might be in the minority but I think the ride height of the new trucks makes them less functional. My 2wd 2019 F150 sits 6" higher at the tailgate/bed rail than my 1970 F100. I'm 6ft tall and can reach just about anywhere in the bed of the old truck standing flat footed. I end up on my toes or a step to reach the middle of the bed on the new one. I think the only benefit of the new ride height is getting rid of the hump that used to be in the rear passenger compartment.

You might be right, I may really like the ride height. Not what I was expecting. I realize as an EV it can still have great clearance and flat floors.

I drive a sedan that sits very low and I have a 1 ton Ram so I am used to both extremes.

If it's 75 inches tall the workers in this video are giants

I realize this is a prototype.

Don't forget the adaptive air suspension on Cybertruck, which can swing +/- 4 inches either direction...

I'd have to get hands on with it. It has an adjustable height so not too surprising if it's on the lowest setting for that video (or just automatically drops down when parked to make it easier getting in and out). I do wish more higher end full size trucks would go with the 3 seat front configuration. I liked that about my old Silverado.

The windshield wiper concerns me more. It looks like sh@!, doesn't look functional and increases the blind spot between the driver side view mirror and windshield. Bad combination. I don't know why they are so committed to having a flush fit between the windshield and frunk. I get there may be some aerodynamic consideration but just doesn't seem worth it. Makes more sense to just have the wipers in a normal spot and have some automated cover. Length can't be the concern because they could go with the same single wiper design and just start it from the lower position rather than raised.

Horrid. And people still buy toolboxes like back in the day. You gotta get on a ladder to get in that box. It started in 2010s when 18-20" wheels became the norm. Some dude in like a 98 Silverado parked next to me a while back and it looked so short riding on 15" wheels. But i wished my truck were 3-4 inches shorter. This disparity is why the small truck revolution is coming back around.

I'm not a pick-up truck guy so I'm just a mildly interested observer. I'm really struggling to see how the Tesla (or Rivian) is any uglier than all the other pick-up trucks out there. It's definitely a different approach, but they all look equally ugly to me. The front of the Ford on the graphic above is hideous. Does have nice a rectangular look and it just doesn't seem all that different to the Tesla, which is taking the geometrical stuff maybe a little further. I might be wrong, but I'm guessing we'll be seeing more pick-ups looking different to the standard look going forward.

Yep, didn't know that the truck vehicle type that was specifically designed for utility and work also needed to win beauty contests. Many military vehicles like the LAV also look similar for the same reason, function over form.

With that said, the Rivian and F-150 Lightning are still more functional as actual trucks than the Cybertruck.

Both are terrible, net, for the environment with no plans from the mfg's to recycle the batteries, or remediate the massive ecological damage the strip mining for lithium/cobalt/platinum etc. require to produce their huge batteries. We also need grid investments on the scale of $2-7K per BEV that people plan to put in their garages for at least the 'last mile' of service (transformers etc).

It might blow your mind to learn that lithium battery recycling is not only possible, but large scale facilities are being built up to service the EV industry as we speak.

But yeah strip mining is a huge issue, not to mention the fact that we are essentialy treating third world employees like disposable automatons in those mines.

You might be shocked to learn how hard it is to economically recycle lithium batteries as the cells/enclosures/liquid etc. make it very difficult to get at the precious metals, and requires massive amounts of energy to do. Yes, it's possible, but that's why less than 5 percent are recycled today and of the notional effort by mfg's to 'fix' this they are only really trying to 'repurpose' old BEV's for other applications, not recycle them, largely. But that just pushes the rock further down the hill, it doesn't actually recycle them.
Tim Weaver

I guess you should go tell the multiple companies that are racing to build the first industrial-scale battery recycling facilities that "it isn't easy" then. Maybe they will see the error in their ways.

Yeah, nobody has been doing it so far. But with 2030 coming ever closer, and no more supplies of lithium being dredged up, they will absolutely have to recycle those metals out of the current stock of batteries. Just like they are doing with catalytic converters currently.
nortex97
How long do you want to ignore this user?
AG
Catalytic converters are much easier to recycle.

Again, it can be done, but it costs a fortune in both money and energy. This isn't an emotional opinion, it's a simple fact. Companies are started and race all the time toward a goal that doesn't happen/isn't realistic without massive subsidies. Show me a business plan/technology that does this affordably and I'll listen, it's not worth an argument about. The point is that people buying these cars need to know 95% of the batteries are just hazardous waste when they are done with them.

Parked next to a TRX, F150, and Tundra it doesn't look much smaller, but it is slightly shorter since it peaks at the A pillar and not the C pillar.

Fwiw, most 1/2 ton trucks today are ridiculously over large for what they are categorized as. They all have what were once 3/4 ton specs basically.

That's fine if you want a needlessly heavy and overly large truck for many normal routine light truck duties like getting a few things from a hardware store or towing a small trailer or average sized boat or just driving around and parking places most of the time. As someone of average height, I find today's truck bed heights just stupid. They have to make special tailgates and bumpers so most people can even easily access them now. And the gigantic engines require gigantic cooling which requires gigantic radiators which requires a gigantic hood making them nearly useless for any technical driving because you can't see right in front of you.
If you are hauling really big stuff, then they definitely have utility there. They have their places, but somewhat smaller trucks have more general functional utility and more people are starting to recognize that.
