A family legend claimed on my wife's side is that my wife's great-grandmother was the first woman to drive up Pike's peak. Based on family history and location, it may be true.
I was in Colorado Springs one year the week before and a ton of the racers brought their cars out downtown and you could walk around and talk to them. One dude had a Porsche 928 with a centrifugal supercharger setup that he home built. Lots of garage projects giving it a go along with big money entrants.
It's an awesome event, grass roots all the way up to factory supported.
One of my coworkers used to go every year with his friends, not sure if they still do it. He says a lot of what made it awesome is slowly going away as more of the course gets paved, but everything can be like that if you have great memories of how your experience was, and it starts to change. It seems like an awesome race, and it's a beautiful part of the country to visit anyways.
