I've done a bit of towing the past couple of weeks, and anticipated doing a bit more this weekend, so I left my hitch on.

Well, my son went to open the tailgate to show his buddies how it worked and BAM! Tailgate smoked the hitch, scratched and dinged it pretty bad, and I suck at touch ups.

Meanwhile, GMC engineers and warranty claims depts:

Some dealerships had buyers sign a disclosure about this exact issue. So far so good on my end but I feel for you. My daughter did grab my clicker and drop my tailgate into the garage wall but it was luckily minimal scuff

I signed no such disclosure, In fact, no one at the dealership even showed me how the tailgate worked...I just started pressing buttons to figure it out.

Damn shame

I was about to hike up a mountain to drop off my boring two function tailgate (open/close) but seems like I should hold off a bit.

Not laughing at you, but I do find it entertaining that they got so wrapped up in if they could, they lost sight of if they should.

Don't get me wrong, its a great idea, and the sound bar in the tailgate is awesome too. However, all they had to do was create a simple switch that would lock that function when the hitch is present.

It was literally that simple of a fix.

You are trying to make this a warranty claim?

Damage caused to the truck from manufacturer's own poor design would fall under a warranty, am I wrong?

Fell victim? Warranty claim because you opened the 15th moving part of your tailgate with the hitch installed?

I have a feeling you and I view this world through different lenses.

It's a truck. Rub dirt on it. Come up with a cool story about how it happened fighting of a bear...whatever.

Its a brand new truck that I fell victim to on the second operation of the tailgate...not the 15th. Stop trying to make it sound like I went out of my way to make this happen.

Moral to the story: don't lazily leave the ball mount inserted when not needed. Sounds like a design feature, not a flaw

sounds like they created a problem that is thristy for another Innova...err... solution, the retractable hitch ball!

I am a bit surprised their did not provide an override switch like those in Tahoes / Yukons that override the lift gate. It allows to turn off or turn to a 3/4 position. Would seem somewhat easy to have the last step disabled as a setting.

Looking at this thread, I did see this. Did not research and see how viable it is. Just passing along as I was curious on the issue.

But what happens when OPs dog is sleeping under the truck and the auto hitch pinches his tail? Who do we blame then?

Ball mount inserted because it was needed. Move on

Sorry...a Recall would be more like it, and repairs to any damages caused by a poor design.

Post the damage. Can't help with the dent but maybe I can help a little with the scratch.

Yep, this tailgate has yet to let me down.

My 3 ball mount is always installed. Never know when I will need it, plus I figure if I get rear ended it can't hurt to have it. But my two function tailgate can't contact it either. In fact I don't think there is a single item on my truck that could contact it when operated correctly. I suppose I could take the wires off my tailgate to let it down further. Maybe the 3rd function could be a slide for the kids.

Need to make a sensor for when a trailer is hooked up. Would hate for someone to let their tailgate down remotely on the tongue jack of a trailer thinking they had solved all the issues with this fix.

people actually take their trailer hitch on and off when they aren't towing something at that particular minute?

That GMC tailgate seems like something that will start rattling once the truck gets older.

Did GM design and install the hitch you left in? Seems like their design works fine for the truck they sold you (which didn't come with a hitch installed from the factory).

I've had the hitch installed on my 2007 Tundra since 2009 and my tailgate has zero dents.

Don't stop there. What if you leave a beer sitting on the tailgate and your kid pushes the button? Rather than beat the kid for being a dumbass, demand the dealer buy you another beer.

Don't worry bud. Next generation of trucks won't even have a receiver for a hitch so that your Canyonero Deluxe with speakers in the multi-function, drop-down, step-ladder to access the extreme sports storage box (which shall remain empty to avoid scratching the paint), thereby removing the need to remember that you put a hitch there in the way of said drop-down step ladder.

Also, some thief will steal it and sell it back to you for 15 large, which is half the price of the dealership.

A truck with out a stinger is just a station wagon without roof.
