I'm curious if anyone has a recommendation for a driving school/class in Texas. I've found a few online but want to know what folks think. I saw a BMW performance driving school in Palm Springs and checked out their website- https://bmwperformancecenter.com/school/classes/bmw
so was thinking something similar to that.

I'm looking for something that can teach techniques like high speed cornering , drifting , adverse weather condition handling , etc.

I have a friend who teaches with "The Drivers Edge" but requires to bring your own vehicle and is more track-centric teaching it seems. I don't own a fast car or have plans to do any SCCA racing or anything like that but think it would be a good skill to have.

Not in Texas but I did the Bridgestone Winter Driving Academy a few years ago. I did the intro and performance class over three days. Super fun and educational. You can do a lot more tricks on ice than on pavement because you don't have to go as fast.

We learned in front wheel drive, rear wheel drive, awd in standard and manual.

It's in Steamboat Springs and the performance classes usually sell out the summer the prior to the winter. There were 8 of us in the class. Me and another guy were the normal guys, we had a professional race car driver who took it to be better in wet conditions and 5 dudes that provide security at a nuclear plant.

It was a blast.

Thanks for this rec. I'll probably look into it now that we live in Colorado.

If you end up doing it because you register the summer before you can get good hotel rates. I stayed at a Hampton Inn for about $100 / night.

The BMW Performance Center is in Thermal... at the east end of the valley. Palm Springs has a better ring to it, and is 40 miles west of Thermal.

Have you looked into the Porsche Experience Center in Carson, CA (Los Angeles)?

Lone Star PCA does a car control school every quarter or so. They are held at the Houston Police Academy or MSR Houston in recent years. PCA has always been pretty open to non-Porsche's so you don't need a Porsche to attend.

That should cover some solid basics and if you want to take it farther then you can sign up for their monthly autoX. You'll start with an instructor in the car then graduate to solo runs throughout the day. There is always a Camry or Festiva or S6 sedan out there when I autoX with PCA. Half the day is dedicated to non-Porsches so again don't feel intimidated by the group.

I would not worry about not having fast car or even a performance car, if that's all that is stopping you from heading out to The Drivers Edge. Bring out your Toyota or VW or whatever. I started in a Jetta. The car really doesn't matter at all. But you are correct, the focus there is on track driving; it sounds like you may be looking for something a little more "practical" in nature. I actually wish that existed locally; someone mentioned the PCA car control school, which may be more in line with what you're looking for... been meaning to check that out for years... I want something better than MSRH's teen driving class to send teens to.
