When Mr Dubi spends a zillion hours on something, i'm always trying to calculate the effective cost of the repair at his "hourly rate" at work.

I can understand that. Auto labor is $100/hr. I took a lot longer, but I also didn't take short cuts or have a "that's good enough to last the warranty period" approach to quality. Besides, I actually enjoy the experience of it. Most of the time. And the satisfaction of knowing I did it myself and I truly know how it is done.

But yeah, there are some times when the amount of effort invested is in no way justified by the cost savings, so you hire it out.
