FWIW last year I had to sell my Tahoe that just randomly wouldn't turn on and had multiple shops/dealerships look at it and they had no idea wtf was going on. Was only like 80-90k miles on it.

Our Explorer which has less than 100k miles

1. Would be in park, I'd open my door to get out and it would begin rolling, alarm would go off saying it wasnt in park! Scared me every time

2. Middle row seatbelts would not lock, randomly. while trying to secure a 5 year old, I couldnt leave no matter what i tried. Restarting the car etc. Annoyed me

3. Tires and sensors??! The people at the tire shop got to know us well. We would have to stop to put air in our tires or have the shop check the car at least 3 times a year. Never the same tire. We arent talking 3-7lbs loss. Like 10-20 lbs. Sometimes one tire, sometimes up to three tires. They couldnt explain it either, even after dunking the tire and looking for small holes

4. Radio, navigating it was an abortion. The GPS sucked and I would resort to using my phone, yippee! The turn signal chime annoyed me to the point I wouldn't use it if I could make the turn safely (absolutely no traffic)

The leather did not hold up well at all. It's why I started the tread on leather seats because we bought a new vehicle and I'm hoping they turn out better than the Explorers

Two days after trading it in... another recall notice comes in the mail lol. Glad that's over

My evidence is well over 10 GM models purchased by me, my parents and my in laws. Every vehicle did very well. The little evidence I have on this board's favorite (Ford) doesnt agree with your "evidence"

Hope this helps

My family has owned probably 40 or more GM vehicles. I can come up with about 22-24 I know of and I don't know a) everything my parents or siblings drove when I was in HS/college/later; b) what my parents owned before I was born, but it was almost exclusively GM; c) what my inlaws had, but again, largely GM. So 30 would be a VERY conservative figure as I've owned 6 myself. This doesn't include company cars, of which there were probably another half dozen GM ones, including a Chevy Citation of all things!

All my GMs have been Chevys but my immediate family (parents/siblings/etc.) has owned every line of GM make going back decades except GMC. My father in law's second to last truck was a GMC. So with extended family I've had all the makes covered. The last 4 vehicles we (collectively) had all had problems. The drive trains were solid but most everything else wasn't. My FIL's last pickup, which I owned for a short time, was an exception, but the rest of the V6 GM vehicles we had were problematic. (I would never have touched a 4 cylinder domestic anything). My dad's last Caddy was a squeak-mobile and my sister had to all but give away her last Caddy.

Hope this helps more.

Wow. Electrical problems seem to be hardest to fix, especially since the circuits now depend on an IC.

I guess you took a big loss unloading it, huh.

Over 40 problematic vehicles all from GM. Kept on buying? Sounds like stupid buyers. Congrats to you and your family.

Wow... really??

Every manufacturer has produced lemons.

We typically try to find a balance between function, style, and dependability when buying a vehicle (not including project cars).

This board is mainly car guys who do a lot of their own repairs so we tend to look at things differently than most buyers and each have our own quirks.

I won't buy a
  • Full size truck with a 5.5 ft bed
  • Vehicle with a timing belt
  • Vehicle with an engine that shuts down some cylinders while driving

I realize there are folks on this board that will disagree with some or all of my "quirks" and am fine with that.

I won't bag on anyone for their brand loyalty because I'm not paying for their car note or repair bills. My favorite truck had issues and will get bashed for them (some rightfully so) but I loved the power and towing ability more than I hated the cracked dash.

For the OP, happy wife happy life. I will say if you have or will have kids make sure your wife sits in the back seat for a test drive. Anecdotal I know but a neighbor bought his wife a mid size SUV and ended up getting rid of it because their daughter would sweat her butt off in her car seat.

Forget reliability. Just go get in one, then get in all the competitors. If the GM is still near the top of your list then have at it I guess. A friend has an Enclave and every surface of that interior is a massive disappointment.
Can you elaborate a little on the Enclave interior?

Thanks all for the input. Still in the early stage of doing research on options. Just had to replace the throttle body on her Altima which has prompted discussions. Fuel economy is a very important factor as she drives approximately 24k miles a year between work and daily living. We have also been intrigued by the new Kia telluride, which has been discussed on this board too.

Since she drives a lot, I would consider a kia or Hyundai

They are good cars with a great warranty and will get good gas mileage. A santa fe or sorrento would do great.

It was like every other GM product I've been in. It photographs ok, but the perception of quality just isn't there. Every surface you touch feels like it has no weight behind it. Even the seats feel a little bit flimsy.
