It's starting to look like the wife may need a vehicle in the next year or so. As the current one is going on 102k + miles. She drives a lot for works as she is in outside sales. Looking at SUVS. She is really intrigued by the GMC Terrain with the 1.6 L turbo diesel. Has anyone had any experience with this particular model?

I have never understood this board's collective dislike for all things GM. Its borderline weird. You can google, "best selling SUVs" and GM has their SUV's littered on every list.

Is this an Aggie thing or a texags thing? Its definitely not a "rest of the world" thing

My in laws have 3 SUV's. Trailblazer, Traverse, and my sister in law has the Acadia. No issues whatsoever. I've driven the Traverse several times. I prefer the look of the Acadia

You selected a tweet from CNBC? Are serious?

A good portion of those "best selling" are the rental fleets. They love GM products.

I bought an Equinox for kids to drive. It lasted through 3 kids in high school before major problems at 58,000 miles. But it had nagging problems the whole time. I inherited a Terrain when my mom passed. It has been good overall but compared to my wife's Toyota Highlander it exudes poor workmanship and Has zero power.

I would pass on either one now

Hell No on a diesel suv. Keep it simple.

You posted a tweet from CNBC with GM, Ford, and Infiniti. Hardly substantiates your "not just a texags" comment. Seems to rather confirm it.

GM SUVs are behind (reliability/build quality) when compared to the best Japanese and Korean counterparts. I personally would pass on the Terrain and Acadia versions, but I like the Tahoe. Buy whatever suits you and don't worry about what others think. ANY of today's SUVs are better than the best from 10 years ago.

We just bought a brand new 4Runner and I posted it a few days ago. We came oh so very close to buying a VW Atlas. I highly suggest you test drive one. I feel like their interior is top notch considering the price. I was very impressed. They have a lot of room in them. More than our 4Runner, and the 13' Explorer we traded in

Glad everyone actually read the article considering it was specifically about the terrain and not gm. It's expensive for what you get. would love a real counter argument other than oh it's CNBC.

I would stick to a 5.3L engine if going GM (Tahoe). Otherwise, consider a pilot, Highlander, etc. My problem with Honda and Toyota is lack of comfort with seats / longer drives.

Why are you worried about a modern car with 102k miles? I have 3 with more than that and don't think too much about any of them on a daily basis.

Keep on trucking.

Kid is driving a 2014 Terrain that we bought last November. Our 2014 Volt has been awesome but the 4 cylinder Terrain is disappointing. Bought it cuz she loved the driving position (she had hip surgery at age 18) and could drive pain free but jeezus the thing annoys me to no end.

This is, of course, only one rating, but except for Caddy, all GM brands are in the lower half of the ratings:

What are the best and worst car brands in the US in 2018?

Your anecdotal evidence isn't really persuasive to the rest of us who have our own such evidence. Not to mention the fact that some are still bent out of shape over the whole government motors thing.

My wife's minivan has 110,000 miles....

Hell No she ain't getting a new car... Better get 250,000 miles outta that van...

I doubt any y'all would read this but...

GM Quality

In my 28 years in Healthcare, I spent 20 years involved with quality stuff (name changes every 6 months) among other Healthcare issues.

I'm sure most of you are aware of Edwards Deming and Quality associated with auto industry. Yes Japanese adopted it early on and Ford hopped on in the 80s with their Ford Quality #1 once they realized Japanese auto industry was improving rapidly.

Where was GM?

In my anecdotal experience, every GM vehicle I've owned sucked. The last one was mid 90s Tahoe that couldn't have been any worse. I've owned Hondas, Acura, Toyota, Jeep-Wrangler Brah, BMW, VW (sucked), Oldsmobile, Porsche, Lexus, Nissan and probably more.

And the GM experience was the worst. Maybe coincidence. Maybe not.

At this point in my life (I'm 52), I imagine I will probably only buy Toyota/Lexus, Honda, Ford - truck, or Porsche if I was looking for a car. Nothing else.

Thanks all for the input. Still in the early stage of doing research on options. Just had to replace the throttle body on her Altima which has prompted discussions. Fuel economy is a very important factor as she drives approximately 24k miles a year between work and daily living. We have also been intrigued by the new Kia telluride, which has been discussed on this board too.

We have a pilot. We just took it to Winter Park Co from Dallas and averaged just under 27mpg, which I thought is pretty darn good with 2 adults, 2 kids and loaded with luggage. It's the best car we have had.

Forget reliability. Just go get in one, then get in all the competitors. If the GM is still near the top of your list then have at it I guess. A friend has an Enclave and every surface of that interior is a massive disappointment.

My evidence is well over 10 GM models purchased by me, my parents and my in laws. Every vehicle did very well. The little evidence I have on this board's favorite (Ford) doesnt agree with your "evidence"

Hope this helps

FWIW last year I had to sell my Tahoe that just randomly wouldn't start and had multiple shops/dealerships look at it and they had no idea wtf was going on. Was only like 80-90k miles on it.
