Ford Carplay Waze/GPS Speed Issue

How long do you want to ignore this user?
I noticed this on Thursday and finally figured out that others were having the same issue on some other forums yesterday so I wanted to share and see if anyone else here is seeing this. Initially, I thought something was wrong with my speedometer. I have a 2018 F150 with Sync3.

The latest Waze update adds a speed indicator in CarPlay. The speed reported is about 5 miles per hour higher than the truck speedometer. What is strange is that when I run a speedometer app while the phone is plugged into the truck the speed shown is the same 5 miles per hour over the truck speedometer. However, if I unplug and run Waze or the Speedometer app on my phone not plugged into the truck it then agrees with the truck speedometer. So something must be happening to the GPS source when the phone is plugged into the truck and it's not just Waze. For now, I turned off the speedometer in the Waze settings but this is just bizarre.

Maybe ford smears the mph in the trip computer so you think you're getting better MPGs than you actually are

Well at least yours reports a higher speed. My Silverado infotainment screen reports it as about half of what my speedometer says.

Not waze specific according to the forum discussions, but a Sync 3.0 issue. I wish Waze would just use the GPS in the phone like it does when not connected to CarPlay

Is that using bluetooth or a wired connection?

I don't think Ford supports wireless android Auto or CarPlay

I know they don't do wireless Carplay just curious about Android Auto since this issue seems to only be present when there is a wired connection.

As stated below I think it's wired only

We had a rental expedition last week and had the same issue. It was about 12-15 off at freeway speeds.

I am having the same issue in a 2019 F250 running WAZE. The speed is about 12 miles off going 70-75mph.

Really annoying

From the Waze Forum:

Quote:

Current v3.0 sync 3 versions sends inaccurate (higher) speed readings to Carplay - and that's why Waze shows a higher incorrect speed on these Ford cars (eg. 65mph shows as around 76 mph).
The issue lies with Ford and not with Waze. The fix needs to come from a Ford sync v3.0 update issued by Ford.
They are working on an "official" v3.0 update to be released in the future to resolve this. (version number higher than 19000).
So need to wait for that to be released.

So we wait.

I turned the speedometer off in the app settings but I do miss the Speed Limits being there, but not the constant red speeding warning thing.

Just got back from a weekend in Denver/Estes Park renting a '19 F150. Didn't notice the speedometer issue but when using Waze and other navigation apps with Apple CarPlay, our position was all over the place on the map, most of the time not even on the road so it was basically unusable. First I thought it was something to do with limited satellite signal due to being in the mountains but when the phone was unplugged from the USB input, Waze worked as normal.

Side note, every time I rent a car, I use my phone GPS to calibrate the car speedo.

My phone has been doing this lately. Android phone, no Car Play, etc.

Can't seem to find sattelites.

Did this happen every time you used it or did you just try once?

I've had this happen twice in my truck (;17 f150), but it's something weird electronically, as each time it did it, i pulled over, turned the car off, then turned it back on and everything was back to normal.

Ford could easily make drastic improvements to their CarPlay interface. First and foremost, leave the header bar on the display when in car play. You'd be able to still see the outside temp, inside temp, etc.

As for the speed issue, I'm currently seeing it as well. 10-14mph fasted than my actual speed. Doesn't really bother me as I don't really pay much attention to it but definitely odd.

I tried it several times over the weekend and I don't recall a time it acted correctly when using my apps with Apple Carplay.

This thread made me think of something related but not exactly on topic...

What happens when Waze (part of GOOGLE, Inc now) monetizes your driving data by selling it to insurance companies? Your app that alerts you to "Police reported ahead" could also alert your insurance company that the rates you're paying are way too low for the risky speeds you drive at!
