So yesterday we went to visit my wife's family in Alto, Texas. We started getting tornado warnings on our phone. Since the house we were in was just built to replace the last one that was blown away in a tornado. We were in a pretty wide open area, so we went outside to look and see if we could see anything coming our way. I took these photos of a cloud nearing us rapidly and you could hear something that I thought might be a tornado.

If you ever see this cloud coming at you, run!

Later I realized that sound was not a tornado, but hail hitting the field in front of us. I told the wife to take shelter in the house with the kids. My stepdaughter needed her medicine, so I went to grab it before I went back in the house. I couldn't find it at first glance, so I jumped in my truck to search since it was raining fairly hard. All of a sudden my truck started getting pounded by the biggest hail I have ever seen. It broke my windshield almost immediately and it sounded like my truck was getting hit with bullets. I thought they were going to bust the windows out and start pelting me for a second. Luckily it only lasted about thirty seconds and nobody was outside or got hurt. The damage was done to 11 cars at that one residence though.

My truck suffered the broken windshield, six dents in the hood, countless on the roof, four dents on the toolbox lid, one dent on the roof line above the rear passenger side door, and a busted third brake light.

So yeah, it's a bummer, but I do have esurance with coverage maxed out and only a $250 comprehensive deductible and vehicle match rental coverage. So what do you guys think the damage estimate will be? Could it possibly be worth it to try PDR and avoid insurance to avoid the associated depreciation of a carfax hit? If not, do you think they'll try to fix it right or will it possible be a bondo type of deal? What about the toolbox, any chance they'll fix that or just pay me to replace? I was looking to dump it for a bed cover anyway.

I hate having to get body work, I've been extremely careful with this truck. Always park it way out in the boondocks to keep from getting door dings. To date it's only had a couple of scratches that mysteriously appeared on the bumper while we were on the beach in Destin. No dents at all until yesterday.

I've got a good body shop that I trust already, so that helps.

Got no advice, but that's a scary situation and a weird looking cloud. Glad everyone is safe.

It looks like that is where the body shop may send it anyway, but if you took it there yourself, it won't be cheap. My wife's Rav4 with smaller dents still came in at over 3K (covered). However, I don't guess it hurts to check it out at some place but don't assume that PDR is an inexpensive fix. It is just a different way of doing body work.

They'll find more dents than you'll initially see. Replacing my hood and roof and PDR on the fenders and doors ran me about 9k last year on my 2010.

Ouch, yeah I'm wondering if it might cost more due to the aluminum.

Get it all fixed properly, it'll look good as new with a trip the body shop.

Yes it was a strange experience to say the least. It happened so fast, the ground was covered in hail and my windshield was broken by the time my brain processed what was going on.

Yeah I know. I've just been hit twice and my wife got hit as well in the last six years, all by inattentive drivers. Dealing with insurance, body shops, car rentals, and diminished value is a pita. I also planned to sell it out right in a couple of years or 75k miles. It'll probably be hard to sell now and it has an aftermarket supercharger that I'll get nothing for on a trade in.

I think the moral of the story here is to avoid visiting one's in-laws if at all possible.

True, but last time I was there, her Uncle gave me a jet ski, so I can't complain. My wife also spends a lot more time with my family than hers due to proximity to where we live. I've never even met her parents because they don't live in the US.

I would be interested in your Supercharger when you get to this point. I have a 2015 F150 5.0 that's still NA so maybe we could work a deal to swap the FI for the NA setup.

PDR will take that right out, no problem. I had some guys in Houston do mine, not only did they fix the one dent I claimed, but they also fixed about 4 more that I didn't know I had and it didn't cost me any more...all insurance.

Ouch.

PDR should be able to fix most of that. Except for the glass.

Nope, long story, but two year engagement that led to two day notice wedding for legal reasons. They live in Veracruz Mexico and I think it would be almost impossible to get a visa. Too dangerous for a gringo like myself to go to their town right now as well.

I'll see when I get to that point, but I don't have any of the original parts since I bought it from a dealership already installed. Both trucks would be down for several days at a minimum. It took me about a month to install the kit on my Mustang in my very limited spare time.

Apologies for a mild derailment. Has anyone ever tried one of those inflatable covers?

Yeah, the logistics may not work out. I'll amend my statement and say that if you decide to sell the supercharger separately then I'm an interested buyer.

Sorry to see your truck damaged. More happy to know no one around you was injured. Alto got it bad to be sure.

So don't fret over it over this. Glad to hear you turned in a claim. That was the right decision given how much it will cost. Just make sure the shop you select is certified to work on aluminum body vehicles. Most shops are not. Don't forget about the claim being reported to CarFax - since when did we start caring about what a car salesman tell us anyways?

Not sure why aluminum matters. That hail dented your toolbox. It would've surely damaged any metal body truck.

Thanks, my damage was actually the week before the tornados there though. I got my truck to a good shop today and the PDR guys just happened to be in town. Will know more once they get an estimate worked up. Esurance got me a 2018 F150 3.5L ecoboost for a rental so I can't complain. I bought a bed cover last week to replace the toolbox and it fits the rental perfect, so that was also a bonus since I work out of my truck.

Only matters for the repairs.

Got the estimate back today at $5,800 for repairs. It look like they're doing conventional repairs. The PDR guys were in town last week, so it might be awhile before they're back. The estimate was 8 days for repair.

I drove by yesterday and saw the truck sitting in the yard covered with yellow circles.

I guess I got awhile left in this rental boost. Sure miss my truck though, nothing like a V8, even though the boost is fun to drive.

Yeah, hail that size would have ruined any American vehicle built after 1980, and many older ones.
