I can't seem to find a holder that I like or is worth a darn, does anyone have any rec on what they use/like.

I drive a 2014 ford f350 I haven't found a vehicle specific one if they make them.

Does the metal plate work with a tight case?

I've been using a Nite Ize Steelie, but what you linked would be thinner. The nice thing about the Steelie is the magnet goes on your phone/case so then it can stick to other metal things besides just the car mount. Comes in very handy.

It works fine with my sons otter box. My case is pretty loose compared to that.

I use one similar to this, put the metal plate on the inside of my case, I have no issues with a iPhone 7 plus falling off. They work great.

Same here, except I have this one

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CXV4RXQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_7ClaCbQMFJ5TX

It's great for the holding aspect, not so great for charging. It basically holds the battery power where it is, even streaming music, it doesn't gain much battery power even when it's idle

I do like the fact that it seems to be less distracting, as I have mine mounted to the windshield in the bottom corner. If something pops up, I can see it without taking my eyes off the road.

I've got a proclip holder from my 2014 f250 you can have if you're interested? Worked great for 2 years holding my iPhone in an Otterbox. Not sure where you are but would just need to cover shipping since it's a larger mount. Email is username at gmail dot com.

Most of the newer phones already have a plate built in.

I have something similar to this in my f150. It's fine but the phone will fall if the road is too bumpy. I use a ram x mount in my FJ40 and that phone aint going nowhere.

I have this one. My Galaxy s4 required a plate. And it works fine in a case.
My S7 works fine in the case, no plate required.
My S9+ works fine with no plate but falls when I hit a bump if it is in the case

thinking about trying this one.

I use this one in my '12 Silverado. The pickup has power outlets underneath the A/C controls so it is the perfect height. The magnet is very strong and my S7 has never fallen off of it. The only downside is I cant wirelessly charge anymore after putting the metal plate on the back of my phone case. It messes up the induction.

I'm on my second Proclip...it freaking rocks, it's kinda expensive but you can't beat the quality.

Late to the party but I just got the steelies. It is awesome. You do need to adhere it to a smooth part of the dash and you will have a button thing on the back of the phone but it holds great. I use it in my work truck on a refinery that the roads are extremely bumpy and it never falls. Plus your phone can stick to anything metal.

Have had this a year and love it. I have a hour commute each way and always have Waze going as well as whichever app I'm streaming music or podcasts on, and it's all within easy reach.
