Want to roll your eyes? I mean I'm not the end all expert, but sometimes I hear stuff and I'm like WTF.

I went to lunch with some customers today and two of them were in the back seat talking about cars.

"Turbo tech is pretty cool. You like this new Econoboost ?"

[I just smile] "yeah, it does pretty good so far."

The first guy said "Yeah I just bought my wife one of them BMW twin turbo 428i's, that thing screams. Its got 300hp." [rolls eyes]

The guy next to him said "Yeah, I sold my jeep last year and picked up a Hatchback jetta. Its got 300hp too, and I get 40mpg driving to work every day." [wait, this dude bought a Golf R??]

So I ask "Did you get a Golf R?"

He replies "Naw, Its one of them 1.8 TSI's, I had one of those RPA tunes and intakes put on. Its the same thing except they do it instead of Volkswagen. Really opened her up." [facepalm]

So I ask "APR?"

"Yeah, I think that's them".

To be fair and unbiased, my Ford Diesel has an unknown amount of HP because I have never put it on a dyno and it gets 15mpg on a great day.

Last week my MIL (during her 3rd or 4th glass of bourbon) started ranting about her brother who had recently bought a new Camaro and added racing stripes to it a few weeks later. Her argument was that he had no business putting racing stripes on his car because "he's never dragged raced."

I just laughed because I don't know if she thought that her brother's intent was to start drag racing his V6 wonder car because the stripes would enter him into some form of elite go fast community? Clearly they just thought the black stripes on a white car just looked neat and that's about that. I highly doubt a 70-year old, retired football coach is really interested in taking a V6 with an automatic to the track.

I know my MIL has at least been to a track, because for a while in the late 70's and early 80's their "family" car was a 68 mustang that my FIL would spend his evening wrenching and then take to the track on weekends. I've seen pics of the car and it didn't have stripes. My he wasn't elite enough?

Either way, there was a lot of eye rolling that day.

I've gotten it coming down from the mountains and just letting it roll in sport mode .

I got a lecture once from an uber or lyft driver about turbos and how he'd never own one because shutting off the car instantly with out sitting in it for a while to let the fan stop moving is why they fail and that the industry has never done anything about it.

Well, that's cause you haven't dropped in a CAI with K&N filter, and installed a sweet exhaust like the one I got on eBay.

+100 hp, and 25mg all day long. I know 'cause the ad says so.

Depends on what you want to do with it. I have a 2013 335is (produced 2011-2013) and they brought the N54 (relabeled the N54T) back from 3 series retirement (2009 onward saw the N55 in the E9x platform through the E9x's retirement) and tuned it for 322hp/362tq (302hp/295tq in the 335i application).

The general consensus is the N54 (and N54T) can handle more tuning than the N55, but the N55 is more reliable for daily drivers. From the factory, both produced 302hp/295tq in the E9x application. Both are near-identical except for the turbo setup.
