Range Rover Sport Question

How long do you want to ignore this user?
So, in 15+ yrs of marriage I have pretty much the most unmaterialistic wife a guy can ask for. The one thing she's really liked recently is the Range Rover Sport. Her 40th Bday is coming up so I'm strongly leaning towards going big on this next car purchase for her.

2 Questions on this:

1: Is the reliability rep (or lack thereof) on this overstated? Meaning, I always hear a lot about "my LR/RR is in the shop again" or "if you have a LR/RR be prepared to have it or parts of it not working from time to time". I live in BCS, so I don't live near a LR dealership so if it really has a lot of issues then it might turn into a pain in the ass.

2: I think I know the answer to this but is it better to be a 2nd owner on this car from a depreciation stand point? I usually only hold on to cars 3-4 years before selling. I don't lease because as a family we put way too many miles on our cars.

1. Be the second owner
2. Buy it CPO
3. Get it in writing that the LR dealer will pick up and deliver when it needs to get fixed.
4. Sell it before CPO runs out.

Wife has one and has lived it. Wouldn't hesitate to get another, the dealership has been great for us. Granted, we live in houston and are 3 miles from the dealer....

Which dealer? (Im likely buying in Houston too). How many miles do you guys have on it so far? Any non ordinary maintenance issues?

Land Rover Houston Central. Has about 20,000 miles on it, she's had it for about 2 1/2 years. One issue outside regular maintenance....ended up being a wiring harness being pinched from a previous accident repair. Dealership still gave us a loaner car, when they realized that was it and it wasn't warranty, they let us keep the loaner car, called our insurance, had the adjuster come out and confirm the issue, and reopen the claim. So we weren't out of pocket a penny. It did take a little longer than I would've expected, but with the service and updates we were given I had 0 complaints.

I've never been in or driven one, but Consumer Reports GUSHES over the Audi Q7 and rates it their #1 SUV overall.

May want to at least check it out. She may change her mind and you end up with a better overall vehicle.

Neighbor had an evoque. Loved it when it ran. Daughter and I had a running joke that he had a color changing car it was in the shop so much. Including leaving him stranded on trips from Dallas to Colorado once.

He upgraded to the reliability of a jaguar suv. What can I say, he is a nice guy but an architect and ku grad...

My wife had a black '10 RR Sport SC which we bought new. We live 5 hours from the nearest Land Rover dealer which was disappointing, but I obviously knew that going in. She drove it a little over a year and 17,000 miles before we had our first kid and she wanted something bigger. She still talks about it as her favorite car. I think the nostalgia is better than owning it was, but it continues to pay dividends for me in brownie points. I recommend you buy one.

I traded it in on a new '12 Yukon Denali and wrote the dealer a check for $2,000. That was by far, the cheapest car trade of my life. Trading it in is my favorite part of owning it.

To answer your question, the most recent ones don't have the reliability issues of previous generations.

Isn't there a BMW dealership in BCS?

I'd lean towards that in this situation.

Those rides are pimp. Get one.

I see tons of them every day in here in Cali. For some reason it seems only hot chicks drive them! Ha!

I like the Q7 too. But she's kinda meh about it, the BMW X5, and the MDX.

She's actually pretty vocal on the RRS which is why I'm even considering it and now actually leaning pretty strongly towards it. Not vocal as in "buy it for me" as she's never been that type, but vocal as in "I love those..they are badass" whenever we see one. She especially loves the white frame with black top color combo. (Thats as close as she'll ever get to asking for something like that lol).

She kinda likes the Mercedes GLS 450/550 too but not nearly as much.

Can Certified Pre Owneds be purchased from non LR dealerships? The Houston area CPO inventory is slim at best if at LR dealerships only.

Few people I know had limited issues with their RR first few years. Those who didn't lease and kept it had the air suspension break eventually (not cheap, 10k? out of warranty) and bunch of other crap. If I got RR I would lease it.

We looked at buying one. But cpo only from a dealership. Buy from one not local and ask them to deliver it.

Based on what you said about her, I wouldn't consider anything but the range rover.

Ya, decisions pretty much made. Thanks for the help everyone.

BDay is in August, so from now until then I'll be on the lookout. Preferring a 2016 or 2017 with less than 25k miles on it so I can still get a couple of years of warranty action out of it.

Update: closed on a 2017 white RRS yesterday at a Houston dealer. Wife loves it! Thanks for the help!

Make sure you let them know now what kind of scones you prefer in the Service drive.

Seriously, enjoy the ride and congrats on buying your wife nice the things that she asks for.

Don't - you will be in the shop.

Or do, and knock the shine off it quickly so all she ever wants is Toyota
