Looking at getting a family hauler. Any thoughts on one verses the other?

Tahoe

Pros:
Technology
Interior quality
Performance
Gas mileage

Expedition

Pros:
Safety
Interior space
Boost
price

How are they as far as ride quality, road noise, reliability, etc.

The almost 8 grand in rebates on 2017 expeditions is also quite attractive....

I really like my 17 Expy EL so far. My wife loves it so much she's put 24,000 miles on it in less than 6 months.

We're both pretty pragmatic buyers and we felt like we got more for our money with it though we loved our old suburban.

yes it does. puts me in a new Expedition for the price of a used Tahoe.

I'm not a fan of the GMs because of limited third row leg room and rear cargo space. I would look at the Sequoia also.

I went with the Sequoia over the Expedition, mostly because I got a good deal on a 2016. The base level Sequoia (SR5) tends to be cheaper than a similar Expedition.

Expeditions are more common, and easier to find what you're looking for.

I think the Sequoia looks better: a little more curvy and less boxy.

Expedition offers an EL version (think Suburban vs. Tahoe), while the Sequoia is a little bigger than the standard Expy and a good bit smaller than the EL.

Engines on both accelerate nicely. The Ford gets better mileage with the Ecoboost, but the Sequoia might be more reliable being naturally aspirated (fewer parts).

I think the seats in the Sequoia were more comfortable. And its second row has the three seats that slide, recline, and fold down independently while Expedition is 60/40. But if you want second row captains chairs you can't get it in the base level Sequoia.

If you go off pavement, both have 4wd, and both have a center differential for 4wd on road in slippery conditions. Sequoia has better ground clearance. Expedition has a locking rear option. Sequoia has an electronic braking system to control slip.

I'm assuming this is for a normal elevation in Texas, but one comment I wanted to make is that when we rented a Expedition EL and drove through Taos (or any area of elevation), there was little impact to the power it could make.

The 3.5L can be a monster when needed. A v8 will lose ~20% of it's power at 5,500+ feet.

my issue with the Sequoia is that it hasn't been updated in 10 years so all the technology is old and kinda looks old inside. they are getting a new design in 2018 but I don't like buying the first year of a new design since they have bugs to work out.

It also has the worst gas mileage of the 3 with the shortest range. It does have more cargo room though but if need to fold down both rows I will just use my truck.

Fair points. Styling is subjective, especially exterior. GMs have the nicest interiors for aure.

I've had both. A 2012 EL and now a 15 Yukon that we're both new when purchased. Yukon wins on styling, but that's it. Expedition had better ride, more comfortable interior, more leg room, more cargo space, more power and better built. We're on our last kid hauler now, but if in the market again it would be a ford hands down.

Got a 2012 expedition king ranch and really like it. No issues and has handled Boy Scouts, all their gear and long drives easily. Comfortable ride

Pros/Cons for me after owning a Tahoe and driving an Expy for work.

Tahoe

Pros:
Seat comfort
Better handling
Better ride quality
Better fuel mileage
Better traction control on slippery roads

Expedition

Pros:
More leg room in back
Better torque
No active fuel management (cylinder deactivation)
Dash didn't crack

Overall, I liked the Tahoe better. The Expedition had a lot more issues in regards to traction control and I had to do a full front-end replacement at just over 100k miles. It would get really squirrelly on wet or icy roads and would get loose in the back-end all of the time during winter driving in WY. This might have been a one off problem for that particular vehicle, but I felt a lot safer in the Tahoe when conditions weren't optimal.

thanks for all the feedback.

I went this weekend to look at both and test drive. Here are my take aways.

Expedition
bigger 3rd row
cargo area is lower when seats folded down
more room up front
smoother acceleration
large side mirrors
handling was good (better than my F150 at least)
lots of rebates on the 2017
power folding running boards

Tahoe
nice exterior styling
comfortable seats
front center console gives cramped feeling
really small side mirrors for its size
smoother ride
3rd row is tiny
nice technology options on top trim model
transmission shifts were firm to the point of being annoying

It also seems like we could not find a mid trim Tahoe that came with folding mirrors, blind spot monitoring, ventilated seats, push button fold down seats. We could get those options on the mid level Expd

After looking at the numbers and comparing similarly equipped models we would be spending close to $20k more on the Tahoe. For that price difference it isn't worth it.

Not sure if interested at all but I purchased a 2017 Nissan Armada and absolutely love everything about it. They are made by Infiniti and look just like Q80 I believe is it just about 20k cheaper, they have good rebates on them as well.

Actually Nissan makes Infiniti cars.

The US Market Armada and QX80 are both based off Nissans global offering, the Patrol, except the US Market ones dont get all the cool offroad stuff and diesel engine choices that the ones that are sold internationally offer.

I had a King Ranch 2016 Expy that I traded back after 7 months... it was terrible. I had an Armada and if given the opportunity would get one again before both an Expedition and/or Tahoe (Tahoe information based on my use of/riding in my friends extensively).

Isn't there an all new Expedition coming out in early 2018?

They are also going to be ridiculously expensive.

We traded in a 2013 explorer xlt for a 2017 expedition EL and th wife is REALY happy with the upgrade, as am I.

Oh and the 2017's are RWD.

All expeditions 97-2018 are RWD/4WD

Explorers 91-10 are RWD/4WD. 11+ FWD/4WD
