Although my first truck was a 1999 F150, I agree that the 1997-03 generation F150 was the worst looking. When I purchased that truck I really wanted to get a Super Duty but that was not in the cards at the time.

Most of us here are fans of Ford F-150 Truck. I drive the 2012 version and have been pleased. Not every year can be a winner. What is your pick for ugliest year model?

My pick would have to be the 1997 Step Side...

My boss (who probably clears $200k/yr. not that it matters) drives this exact same truck, color and all. I know it's a very practical decision, and makes great financial sense... just would not be my choice of daily driver.

Man I loved this model when they came out (I was in high school). Definitely hasn't aged all that great, but I still don't hate it. I don't like any stepside pickups though, and this one is no different.

I drove an f250 almost identical to this through 6 years of A&M

I feel like the lightning is different for two big reasons:
A) step-sides just don't look like they belong on extended cab pickups. They're a throwback to a different time, so they just look out of place on a longer truck.
B) a lot of subtleties make the lightning look better. It looks like it was designed intentionally, whereas the extended step-side looks like it was a package that was slapped together.

Another contender:

Worst step-side ever (not a ford):

Not sure what year this is. It hasn't moved from this spot since I've been alive. Wasn't ever very fond of this body style.

That is a 1971 or 1972.

I learned to drive in a 1971 F100 with a 360 and a 4-speed. We had that truck until about 1982 when I got distracted picking fire ants off myself at age 14 and ran it through a fence.

I ran a 64 into our lake house at the same age. Nobody told me I might have to pump the hydraulic brakes. I was either going to hit my father's van, a 250 gallon propane tank, or the house. I chose the house.

I always thought 03-06ish Chevy stepsides were the worst. Sharp, square corners up front and smooth rounded rear step side fenders. Just looked goofy to me

Growing up, I loved 92-96 Ford Flaresides. Don't see too many anymore.

The first and only pickup truck I've ever fallen in love with at first sight was the the maroon/tan King Ranch 4WD when they came out in ~ '02. I couldn't afford a new one at the time, but I did buy a used one in '05.... I still have it and I still think it's the best looking truck ever made.

Yeah, they didn't refresh the bed with the '03 update, so it didn't match very well.

I hated the 97-03 design and waited patiently for the redesigned '04 before making the move. Surprised that some find the 04-08 version to be among the worst. Another thing about the 97-03 version is that they had pretty bad crash tests if I remember correctly.

I had brown 86 that looked very similar. It was ugly, but I was happy to have it.
