4x4 SUV for my wife - leaning 4Runner

My wife wants to trade up from her Elantra to a bigger car with clearance and 4x4. She got stuck in the mud and saw how great it's been driving in my Tundra with all the rain. Heck, she wants a lift with bigger tires too (not needed but hey I'm down!)

I am leaning 4Runner because it's a Toyota of course, but what would be other similar options?

Also, I got my Tundra used but it seems used 4runners hold their value so well that maybe new is the way to go?

Yeah just go for it. Mine isn't 4x4 but I love it.

Unless you can find one used and get the $2000 rebate for new ones incorrectly applied to it.

Any interest in an FJ? Already has the lift and a few other goodies.

Grand Cherokees look nice, but I've heard they can have electrical issues. Essentially I stay away from Chrysler/MOPAR. Is this unfounded?

I had convinced her of an FJ, but I hear the backdoor is a B for babyseats.

Rear facing seats are a huge pain. The small size of the backseat and the lack of rear legroom are another.

I wish I would have bought a 4Runner 4x4 at the time, but we only had two, they were young, and it worked.

Add a third and not so much.

Get the 4Runner and don't look back. Just make sure that you buy one that has the factory rear locker.

I think it'll be a 4Runner. She also really likes the aggressive look of the front and I like knowing she'll be in a bigger car. We'd get her a Tundra if I didn't already have one.

The ONLY downside is the gas mileage. While she works 5 miles from home, she sees her parents once a week and they live 70 miles round trip. Add the lift/bigger tires and probably be in the 17 mpg highway range.

My buddy has a Trail Premium and its nice. I get the urge to buy one when I ride in it.

The TRS PRO looks sweet! But that might be overkill. Knowing my wife she will try to go off-road and bite off more than she can chew.

I've read August is the best time to buy new. New models are coming out and people just blew all their money on summer vacation and school is starting so buying slows down. True?

2017 4 runners will be out at the end of Sept if that helps
I will NEVER apologize for being American

Do it! My dad bought an orange TRD Pro and we installed some aftermarket bumpers in February.

The 2017 TRD Pro looks damn good in the cement color. Or just get a trail edition and do upgrades yourself and still pay less than what you would for the Pro

My wife forbids driving anything orange (good Aggie).

I think they look sweet too.

I am thinking we can get a loaded SR5 and do the leather and all other cool stuff aftermarket for less.

Mileage is not much of a concern with oil prices suppressed for the foreseeable future.

Go see Buck at Tegeler in Brenham. I bought my tundra from him and could not have been happier.

But at least it isn't that burnt @$$ ugly orange!

That orange looks damn good in person. Put Association and a 12th Man decals on it and know it's all Aggie.

Looks sweet, but can't put a lift on that!

I wouldn't sweat the 17 mpg as your total mileage projection is peanuts compared to the total cost of ownership of the truck with upgrades you are describing compared to the slight MPG increase you would see on a "tamer" SUV.

DO IT!

Yea, I'm not concerned. It is rediculous to be concerned with mpg when getting an SUV with extras. All it means is budgeting more in the monthly fuel allotment.

Now I have to wait until August to start looking...darn. We do plan on test driving tomorrow just to see!

I have googled the 2017 4runner, and the "new" looks don't have the current "rugged" looks in the photos and videos I have found.

My wife and I just ordered our 4runner from reproag, and if the looks hold true, are glad ours will be a 2016.

Plans for now are to ditch the x-reas shock system, and lift/level with the Bilsteins height adjustable shocks to 2.5" for the front and a 1" spacer in the rear. Still trying to decide on a tire/wheel combo. Like the 285 55 r20, but it just so happens that in the KO2 and Nitto Terra Grappler in those sizes run 130 bucks higher EACH in surrounding sizes. Go figure.

But I want it.

Plus, I'm sure I can find things you own that you don't need as well.

Had both a 2007 FJ and a 2011 4Runner 4wd at different points. Didn't take me long to realize I made a mistake in trading in the FJ for the 4Runner. That vehicle was one of the most uncomfortable driving vehicles I've ever had. From the seats all the way to the suspension it was not a comfortable vehicle.

The TRD edition comes in other colors besides orange now. I've seen a sand/tan color and dark green

I have nothing to add other than I'd love to trade my wife's Rogue in on a 4x4 4Runner. One day maybe...

I have a 16 Tundra TRD Pro. It is magnetic gray metallic.

For 16 the colors for pro models (4R included) are white, quicksand (khaki), and magnetic gray.

17 definitely includes the cement (which I think is a beautiful color). I don't know if they've announced what the others will be. I thought I read that their current version of blue would be one of the 3 choices as well, but I can't swear that I didn't dream that. In Ken Starr terms, I may have honestly no recollection of that.

I want to start pricing things for a purchase in a few months.

If I get the base SR5 4x4, can I do everything aftermarket at a price point which makes sense versus getting the Trail or Pro? We don't care about nav and can get leather aftermarket as well as suspension/wheels/tires.

Or should we get the Trail and then go from there?
saltydog13

What all are you wanting to do aftermarket wise?

Own a Platinum Tundra and if I had to do it all over again I'd start at SR5 and aftermarket customize from there. The JBL system is garbage, I'd rather have 18's for the tire cost and offset to fit 35's, TRD PRO suspension is too expensive compared to 6112 or OME equivalent and the seat coolers don't work near as well as the F150's.

I still love the truck, but I could have saved a few grand after all is said and done with the upgrades....and aftermarket modding is much more fun than dealer haggling. That being said, they sales incentives for new make it very easy to walk out with a top of the line model.
