Hadn't bough a vehicle private party in while and didn't realize this was even a thing. What a crock of crap! the SPV on the truck i bought was $1,500 over what I paid for it, thats a lot considering it was not that expensive. How in the world can the state get away charging sales tax on a number that is different from the actual sales price? whats worse is that there is no explanation of how they come up with the number and no way to put in the condition or options on the vehicle. end of rant

State got fed up with people lying about sales price to avoid tax. They came up with a way to stop it.

Yea government.

Go get an independent appraisal to say the vehicle is only worth what you paid for it. The state will then allow you to pay tax on that number. Otherwise, suck it up.

not going to go to the trouble for less than $100 in tax, but if we were talking several hundred I may do something like that.

Isn't SPV indexed to wholesale/auction mkt prices? You musta got a great deal...

you only pay sales tax on sales price or 80% of SPV, so you are $1500 over 80% of SPV ?

I think folks in other states pay a ton more every single year in new regristration.

In Virginia they charge personal property tax on cars you own -- every year.

As if it were real estate rather than a depreciating asset.
