I need new all-terrain tires for my 2014 Ram 2500. I drive mostly on pavement (of course) but do venture off-road regularly. No heavy duty off-roading. I also pull trailers relatively often, but nothing super heavy.

I love BFG A/T KO2s, but I've heard there are separation issues.

I'm now looking primarily at Toyo Open Country ATII or Nitto Terra Grappler G2. Any thoughts/recommendations?

Of those 3 I'd go BFG, Nitto, Toyo.

I would go with Coopers myself

My ATlls howl like crazy a soon as I hit 78. Not happy.

I went through this same research process a few weeks back. I was originally looking at the BFGs and Nitto's primarily. I ended up on one that I never even thought about: Bridgestone Dueler Revo 2's. 1ags Firestone hookup gave me a fair price on them and everything I have read/learned says they are a great tire for on/off road performance. I am putting them on later this month, so I will try to remember to come back here with a report. I do about the same type of driving as you described in your OP.

You may want to check the Firestone Destination ATs as well.

Always wondered...What is ATP vs AT3?

ATP is the discount tire private label and AT3 is sold through other retailers?

OEM on my truck is 285/60R20. I'm looking to go slightly bigger to 305/55/R20.

I can't find anyone near me that sells Cooper tires, or at least not in that size. I looked online at Firestone. Their website is terrible, and apparently they don't make tires in that size (or at least not that I can find).

I hate to hear the comments about the Toyo because that's the tire I was leaning toward. I like the tread design and I have a contact where I can get a pretty good deal. Otherwise I was planning to go to Discount Tire so that I can get road hazard and know there's always one pretty close if something goes wrong.

What comments did you hear about Toyo?

I've never liked them because of the fetish the Ferd guys have with them but I was actually debating between those and my go-to BFG's, never had heard about issues with the Toyo's.

I really want Coopers but they don't make my size . Kumho is another one to look at.

I was referring to silverado_lover and Aggierific's comments above. The interesting thing about Aggierific's comments is that I expected Toyo's to be pretty quiet based on this article: http://expeditionportal.com/where-the-rubber-meets-the-road. I'm not saying Aggierific is wrong, just that I'm surprised.

The Cooper looks good, but they don't make them in my size. The Nitto and Toyo are comparable in price, with the BFG's being a couple hundred dollars more out the door. I still can't find enough info on the Bridgestone Dueler or Firestone Destination to know if they're available in my size and how much they cost.

I'll throw a Nitto Terragrappler vote it in. I'm on the second set of them on my '07 Tundra. Got 77K out of the first set. Have around 50K on set #2. I like them but you definitely don't want to wait too long to balance and rotate them, but that's really any A/T tire.

My vote goes for BFG's. Over time I have had better service out of them than any other tire. I drive a lot of miles, run max air and rotate every 2nd oil change. Never replaced a set at less than 80k.

Cooper sells the AT3 in that size, no experience with that tire though. ATP is baller tho

There's also the Hankook Dynapro ATM which I would pick if the ATP is not available.

What I don't like about Toyo is the price (apparently you have a connection) and availability. For a DD, it's best to have tires that are readily available nearly anywhere IMO

A 305/55-20 tire is already a tire that really won't be readily available, having a Toyo in that size will only compound the issue.

A 295/65-20 is often seen on F250's, often enough that we kept that size tire in our regular stock at Houston's smallest Discount Tire.

The 305/55R20 should be ~3/4" wider and ~1/4" shorter than a 285/60R20. I'm guessing the 305 will have a wider wheel requirement than the OEM wheels. Many tire shops will install a tire on a narrower than recommended wheel, but Discount will not in my experience.

I think Toyos are great tires, but they're also expensive and hard to find in Texas. I own a company which currently has 8 company trucks and I probably buy 10-12 sets of tires per year. I used to let the drivers pick out their own tires until I got tired of paying for BFG ATs every 20-25K miles. They just don't hold up on unpaved roads as well as most tires. Right now, we're running some Toyo Open Country AT2s, several sets of Goodyear Duratracs, 1 set of Nitto MTs, and some Hankook Dynapro something or other. All seem to be good. We buy all our tires from Discount and get the replacement warranties. Out of a new set of 4 tires, 3 will typically be replaced under warranty of any brand.

TxAg 20, I suppose that shows the difference betweening owning a truck and driving someone else's truck on their dollar.
I do hope you never get in the mud with the goodyears because they become racing slicks. Will not clean the tread out. First time in 10 years that I had gotten stuck was with them, let them have one more chance and then pulled them at about 12k. Never again!!

well, i've found the Achilles heel of the Coopers. when it does rain in West Texas, they are no match at all for the slick cakelike mud out there. you can't drive a post 2 inches without hitting solid rock but by god a touch of rain and your spinning like crazy.

Not anymore silverado_lover, nor will they do spacers for wider tires on dualeys.
My SIL is a manager and they really tightened up. Pissed a bunch of people around the Victoria area off bad. I'll bet 50%+ had spacers and bigger tires, but no more if you even want Discount to check your air!!

BFG from those, but I would put the Bridgestone Dueler Revos as #2.

I went with atll because of the same quiet factor but it just hasnt held true for me. Of course it could be unique issues with my vehicle. I switched from bfg. These are smoother overall until I hit 78 then they are horrendous.

On 4th set of Toyos (had two sets of original AT and on my second set of AT2) and won't ever buy another tire.

Always a fan of the BFG ATs. Ran multiple sets of ATs and MTs on my 1/2 tons. Just couldn't find a size I liked for the bigger truck

On my F250, I ran Toyo AT2s once the originals wore out. Got 60k+ and loved them. They were 2 weeks out on the Toyos at Discount and I needed them for a long trip pulling a trailer. Went with the Cooper.ST Maxxs. They are equally as good, but I I kinda liked the look of the Toyos better. Will report back on final mileage. I rotate every 5k.

I just swtiched to Nitto General Grappler from Cooper All Terrains. The Nittos have more road noise, but that's about the only difference at this point. My Coopers never made road noise even when they were completely worn out. I went with Nitto's because their 555 series is the hands down best tire I've run on my Mustang.
