Seeing some nice G37 sports for awesome prices and low miles here lately. Was pretty set on a new GTI in a couple of months, but the used market on the Infiniti has me wondering. I like the GTI and the fact that it's a hatch, but I've gotten away with a trunk for years now. A loaded up 2012 or 13 G sport is way cheaper. It does get quite a bit poorer mpg.

Help me with pros and cons.

GTI has a turbo. Not sure about the G37. I'll leave the rest to the experts here.

This should be predictable.

2 completely different vehicles with totally different characteristics.

What are you most interested in, as far as things you're looking for in a car?

+1 These two cars have nothing in common except for sporting pretensions and price (since you're looking at used G37s). You really ought to test drive both and see what you think, if you really can't narrow it down to at least FWD or RWD, luxury or entry-level.

And yeah there are no factory turbo G37s. Of course they have room under the hood for an engine that's a tad bigger than the VW's though.

Um, drive fast and look cool, of course.

My main problem with the G35 or G37 is that I am completely bored with them. Fine vehicles otherwise. A GTI is probably roomier, if that matters. Can a G37 be found with a manual? I would guess that this large supply of used ones is lease trade ins.

I have a good friend with a G37S coupe 6MT. I remember he had to go out of state to find one with a stick. I suspect like most cars with the option, the manual take rate has been very small, so you'd have to look hard.

I have actually seen a couple of manuals close, but I have a couple of issues with them. For one thing, manual cars do not have hvac vents to the back seats in the center console like the auto. Also, there is no arm rest on the manual, so when you aren't shifting, your arm is kind of in limbo. I hear you about 'bored with them'. It's not a special or rare car by any means. But its a RWD sedan with all the bells and whistles with 320hp to have fun with. Interesting that you think that the GTI is roomier inside. I will have to check that out...

Awww, 320hp. That's cute.

Power is just a matter of how much money you want to throw at your car. It's obviously a platform with a ton of aftermarket support, and more than 10 years of development.

I know you can get to the 500whp level for roughly $10K (maybe a bit less) with a supercharger or single turbo setup...granted it's no longer a stock car with stock reliability at that point, but still. The VQ35HR and VQ37VHR are pretty impressive engines and you can do a lot with them. If it was me though, if I decided I want to make real power in my Z I'd be looking at an LS swap. It's almost downright affordable compared to going TT.

Personally, I like the G-rides. They've always looked TONS better than their Nissan counterpart.

If I were making the decision between a nice, decently fast RWD sport coupe or another FWD hatch, I'd probably go for the RWD. But, if we open it up to AWD for either the G or VW, I'd get the new R when it comes out, or the Audi S3. Tune and boltons and you're over 400hp. So, like $2k more than sticker. It's ridiculous how much power they make with a tune. If the G came FI'd...I'd get that.

Personally, I think you should open your choices up a bit. Maybe a C6 or C5Z06. ??

I require the ability to haul two kids and bikes at any given time.

What about a Coyote 5.0 Mustang or Ecoboost Flex?

I don't NOT like either of your choices, it just seems you've isolated it to two distinctly different platforms and there are many choices if all you need is : quick, 2 or 4 doors, interior room and DGAF about MPG.

Of course I'd like to welcome you into the Dub fold, but only if it's what you're actually looking for.

The GTI isn't exactly "entry-level;" maybe entry-level Audi.

The interior of the '15 GTI is really, really nice.

And with VAG COM, you can do all sorts of cool sh/t nobody else (domestic or foreign) can do with the BCM.

I require four doors. The Flex, while cool, isn't a great handler, and while it can be fast, I wouldn't call it fun to drive. I've had a mustang, and aside from the atrocious interior, the back seat is too small.

Gotcha. Just trying to throw sh/t out there to see if it sticks.

If you've done your homework, which it sounds like you have (or personal experience), and it's between GTI and G35/37, and you're into slight hoonage but not necessarily going full retard like I have... I mean...full enthusiast ....then of those two, I'd choose the new GTI. It's better, stock, than mine was...especially with the sport package or whatever they're calling it with the real LSD and the extra 10+ ponies. A simple tune on top of that nets you ridic-power. Full exhaust and intake, and being done would be less than $2k and you'd be right there, power wise, with any G-ride.

Be forewarned. That power is intoxicating! I love the smell of my exhaust with meth and race fuel combined. Screw braincells.

It's pretty hard to find a G8 that's only 1 or two years old.
