How long do you want to ignore this user?
This weekend I am going to pull the 351w and c6 transmission out of an 82 f150.

My wife will be there to help stabilize, etc. but this is basically a solo venture.

Do y'all think it'd be easier to pull the tranny and engine separately or as one?

I have pulled engines before but never a transmission.

I have a hoist and a floor jack but no transmission jack.

I'll need to set the transmission on a cart and the engine will go on the stand.

Any advice or tips are appreciated.

You should have plenty of room under the hood to pull as one complete unit. The fact that you dont have a transmission jack would make that an easy decision for me. Pulling the tranny itself is easy with the right tools/setup, but it may be pretty tough with one person (unless you have 3-4 arms)

Jack the truck up as much as possible (the higher the better), support with jack stands, and hoist away as one unit. Put it back in the truck the same way as well.

Will the tranny and engine be fairly easy to get apart and maneuver once out of the truck? I haven't ever done that.

Would I just set the engine and transmission on the ground and pull them apart being careful how i rest it, of course.

When I install them again the body of the vehicle will be off so it should be a lot easier to handle.

I'd say let them rest on some old tires until you pull them apart, not directly on the ground.

Yes they will. All of the bolts will be easily accessible and you will be able to get more leverage on the tranny instead of just waiting for it to drop on you. In the past I would dig up some 2x4s or wherever I had to stabilize the engine and tranny as it got close to the ground, but made sure it was not resting on the fluid pans. Leave the hoist chained up, support the engine on some wood (or whatever you fashion up) as close to the ground as possible and take out bolts. It might take some finessing but the tranny should come of relatively easy but be careful, C6's are heavy. Once you separate the combo then you can hoist the engine to the engine stand.

Oh and before you remove the engine/tranny from the car I would remove the torque converter bolts to save yourself a headache later

I just bought a load leveler at harbor freight so maybe it'll make it easier.

F that load leveler. Move the chain as necessary. You'll probably need to let the air out of the tires to clear the core support

Do you have an impact wrench? If not, I would break loose (just 1/2-turn or so) the bellhousing bolts before pulling the setup.

The truck you're pulling from is just a donor, right? I'd remove the radiator, condenser (if equipped), and front core support to give you more room to pull the engine, so you don't have to angle it up sharply to get it out. Of course, it would be recommended to drain the oil and coolant regardless.

I do have an impact wrench and I do plan on removing the front clip etc.

Hopefully it all goes smoothly.

Pulling the hood off will help get that extra clearance...

I got everything unhooked, clip pulled off, fluids drained, etc.

But I absolutely cannot get the u joint off of the drive shaft or yolk of the transmission.

I tried a c clamp with a huge socket on the other end to press it through. I tried heating it up and using PB blaster. Its not even budging.

Anyone have a trick?

If I have to, is it alright to cut through the driveshaft just to get everything pulled. At least then I could work on it without having to be on my back.

Is it not a slip yoke? Unbolt from the axle end, unbolt any pillow block/carrier bearing, then remove

Yeah it is. I am stupid.

I am still very much a rookie when it comes to this stuff.

I guess I will pull the whole drive shaft and use a press to get the u joint off of the yolk.

You call yourself a rookie but you're pulling an engine and transmission?

Nah man, too hard on yourself.

I've rebuilt a jeep before, and changed almost every part on the thing including u joints.

But my experience ends there. I still don't know a lot about the ford. This engine and tranny is going into a 47 pickup
