My compression readings:

I did not have the throttle wide open when testing. Does that make a difference?

The radiator pressure test kit i got from autozone didn't have an adaptor that fits my radiator and the universal adaptor had a leak. So i haven't been able to test that.

I don't think throttle matters with cylinder compression testing. Your numbers look good. You probably aren't leaking any oil there. If so you would see smokey exhaust.

The engine was smoking some after I started it up. From what I have read, that is fairly normal when starting an engine for the first time in a while.

Yeah, I wouldn't worry about that. I would worry if it keeps smoking while you're going down the road.

Pretty good update:

My FIL came back over and we adjusted the timing and did a few other trouble shooting procedures. Now she's running really smooth, and the headers aren't red hot. I ran it for 30-40 minutes with no leaks.


I need to bleed the brakes and do a final check then I am going to take her on her out for a spin.

Thought I'd bump this old thread to ask a question...

the truck is running great, with just a few little things that bug me still. It is a lot of fun to drive around town and is a great conversation starter in parking lots, etc.

I even had a little mishap where I broke down in a Home Depot parking lot...lost all steering...long story. Anyways, I ended up being in the parking lot for 3 hrs waiting for a tow truck. It was like a car show. I bet I talked to 30 people about the truck as they were going in and out of the store.


But that is not why I am here. Every time I drive the truck, the power steering works great for the first 15-20 minutes. Then it gets noticeably tougher. Its like when it warms up, the power steering gets worse. Is this a sign of a bad pump? I did not replace the pump when I rebuilt the engine, so I assume that its pretty old. Or is there something else that could cause this issue?

Yeah, we are going to need to see some new photos of the truck.

Any thoughts on the power steering issue?

Since the new pump is only $50, I think I'll go ahead and replace it since it's so old anyways.

Haha, I'm sorry. I have tons of pics but i still can't figure out how to post them. When i started the thread I used Photobucket, then they crapped out. Then I was using imgur, but they've changed their layout and I am not able to get the correct link/format. Someone above posted some instructions but I couldn't get it to work.


Swapping the ps pump worked like a champ though. Steers amazing.

I tried that too. It said I have to be a premium subscriber

Step 1: Get on your smart phone
2: download and open free imgur app
3: click plus sign in top right corner
4: choose a photo from your album or take one from the app. I don't think choosing multiple will work right on Texags so just pick one at a time
5: click next
6: title it
7: click next
8: click "view post" that pops up at the bottom of your screen
9: long click the picture
10: click copy POST link, not just plain copy link
11: paste link in Texags
12: repeat steps 3-11 30 or so times until we get every angle of this awesome sounding truck
