Owners of these cars, please chime in what you see as Pro's & Con's to these vehicles.

What do you like and dislike about the vehicle.

Have there been any reported defects / recalls?

If you could buy used vs new, which car would you buy?

For those vehicles, I'd probably go new. These are rental fleet queens, so the majority of the used ones that you'll come across have been abused.

We got my wife a New 2011 Terrain and have been pleased with it. We've got about 55k trouble free miles. I say get whichever one you think looks better. At the time, the terrain had a few more standard features than the equinox and it was a better buy. As far as cons are concerned we havent seen anything close to the advertised 32mpg, even on long highway trips. At times the 4 banger can feel under powered, but for the most part it does everything we need it to.

I wasn't a fan of the '11 Equinox. It had a lot of weird quirks to it.

If I had to choose from those two, equinox. I hate the terrains boxy wheel wells.

Are those your only 2 choices?

Terrain is ugly. Small SUV class has lots of choices; I would keep looking.

I've had my 2012 Equinox almost 2 years & I love it. No 'big' problems, a few quirks (radio changing stations by itself - replaced within 2 months of purchase, interior gages/radio dimming during the day - working with GM to try & figure it out). I agree no where near the 32 promised MPG - but I can get close to 500 miles on a tank when on the road.

I had a 2011 Terrain. Good vehicle and I really liked it, but it wasn't fast enough for my liking. My commute changed and I upgraded to a turbocharged sedan. But I would recommend the Terrain - it has really great features standard and is roomy and comfortable.

It doesn't have to be an Equinox / Terrain...I just liked the features for the price and the better gas mileage than I am getting in a 4.6L V8.

I drove a 2012 Terrain last night and I liked it. I don't mind the 4cylinder engine because I want better gas mileage than my current vehicle and I used to have a 4 cyl Jeep Patriot.

So, I am open to other small size SUV's too, so any advice is appreciated.

No rear air was he deal killer for us on both, even though our kids are grown, wife said grandbabies neede rear air. Bought my first Ford ever-Edge and am real happy, lower road noise and better ride.

Not hard to beat those requirements.

I really do not like how the Terrain was modeled against Acme brick. Otherwise I have nothing against it or the Equinox.

But I would shop the Mazda CX-5, Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV, and Ford Escape before you make any decisions.

The CX-5 is blowing the others away on real world gas mileage based on the www.fuelly.com site. 2013 and 2014 model owners are reporting 28+ MPG.

Next is the CR-V at 26+

Next is the RAV4 at 27 or 22 depending on 2013 or 2012 year.

The 2013 Equinox is about 25+

The Ecoboost Escapes are 24 or 23+ depending on year.

Anything that ends in the word "nox" would bother me. Sounds too much like knocks, as in engine.

If I were shopping this segment, a CX5 with a 6-speed manual would be at the top of my initial list.

6k miles on my Escape and still happy with the choice.

There are not many Mazda CX-5's used. Is it a newer model? I only see CX-9's as used.

Ford Edge is around 25k used and I really like those.

I don't like the CR-V for the same reasons others don't like the look of the Terrain.

Toyota Rav 4 doesn't seem like a very realiable car, overpriced for the options you can get on them.

I am trying to stick with Houston area Car Guy Pro Jerry Reynolds dealers.

Can get a new escape nicely equipped for 25K or so.

Let me know if you need a Ford dealer hookup.

If you might could help on a trade. I currently have a Ford that I would be trying to trade in to the dealer.

I recently traded in my 2012 GMC Terrain with only 15K miles. The cons heavily outweighed the pros. Had lots of maintenance issues that I actually found to be quite common via many forums such as stabilitrak light always coming on (4 trips to dealership over this), air conditioning/heater would do the opposite that I wanted (got hotter when I wanted cold), and the transmission slipped in low gears despite being "fixed" several times. I would never recommend this car to anyone!

Other cons included:

Cons:
- Gas mileage no where near what was advertised
- No rear air
