Bmw club in AZ goes on a canyon cruise last Thanksgiving and one of the drivers went off the side of the cliff. Amazingly, the 2 passengers only suffered minor scratches.

Anyone else notice the curtain airbag deploy once the fall seemed imminent? I wonder what kind of sensor triggered that. Amazing that they survived and no doubt in part to the safety systems of that car.

As I very basically understand it, in general the airbags work off of an accelerometer that is located under the center console. The accelerometer works in conjunction with a yaw/pitch/roll sensor. If the pitch, roll or yaw of the vehicle reaches a specific threshold, the airbags and the seat belt pre-tensioners are deployed as needed. There is no "contact" style sensors located in the bumper or on the vehicle, it is all based on the two sensors located near the center of the vehicle. The pitch, roll, yaw sensor also controls the stability control system.

Garland, they hit the little steel post there at the edge. It deployed as soon as that smashed into the door.

What bothers me the most is the disregard for other drivers that could be coming in the opposite direction. There are a few nearly blind corners on that road made worse by high speeds, and these guys are crossing over the yellow line around these corners in a way they could easily hit an oncoming vehicle.

bmks...I am totally with you. I ride a sport bike in areas with lots of curves and I have seen this crap WAY too many times, with cars drifting into my lane and/or using MY lane to increase their turning radius to carry more speed. It's one thing to go out and kill yourself but altogether another to blatantly disregard the rights of others using the road in your own self interests. They make race tracks for that.

I spent 2 months in a wheelchair and another year in PT to recover from an idiot driving a car in the wrong lane that put me, on a motorcycle, in a ditch with broken bones and some heavily traumatized soft tissue.
