Tread wear ratings

I'm looking at 3 different tire options for my new wheels. They have tread wear ratings of 300, 420, and 460. How many more miles will I get out of the ones with the high wear ratings?

(Obviously this is just an educated guess/estimate)

Depends on what kind of tires. The problem is, UTQG treadwear ratings are self declared.

Michelin has some tires with a Rating of 800. Bridgestone has some with 150 in their high performance tires.

I guess it boils down to your driving style and how you take care of tires.

Of course a Michelin Defender and a Brigestone Ecopia EP100 will last a lot longer than say a Walmart Xtra-Trac.

Lets assume all manufacturers cheat a bit to make their tires look long lasting.

That 300 tire will not last long.

And a tire rated 150 is probably a Z, W, or other ultra high performance tire and it will likely last 10,000-15,000 miles on the kind of car it is intended for.

Yokohama is particularly good at overestimating their treadlife.

Strange to hear that. I've gotten amazing life out of the AVID Touring sets and Geolander 51s.

I guess maybe their high performance lines different.

But I agree with spice, anything at 300 won't last long.

I have a personal standard of multiplying the rating by 100 and then deduct 10 percent.

So 300 x 100= 30000 x .9 = 27000 miles.

It is completely made up, and I'm sure some of you will laugh, but its been pretty spot on for non-aggresive tires (touring and general highway all seasons)

QFT. Original equipment Bridgestones on my car have 140 treadwear rating. The tires I've run for the past few years have a 220 rating and last marginally longer. Still summer tires though.

It's true that the treadwear ratings cannot be directly compared across brands because there is no industry standard AFAIK.

I'd just keep the speed rating at or above OE, it's at an industry standard.

My current avids were underwhelming for tread life, every geolandar was a above average.
