When I got my current truck I opted for the $30/yr personalized plates (but with no personal 'message') since I really didn't like the weird blue plates that Texas had. Now that Texas is back to some good looking plates, I'd like to get rid of my personalized plates now and go back to regular ones. Anyone know how to go about doing that?

Yeah, just don't pay the yearly renewal fee. When it comes due, just go to your tax assessor/collector and say you'd like to not renew your personalized plates and need new state issued plates.

You're the third person I know that is doing this. It just reinforces my belief that the State gave us those ugly plates to force people to pony up for the personal ones.

I'm contemplating doing the same.

Here. I will be opting to forego my personalized A&M plates for the new state standard issue next time around.

I'm sure this has been asked a few times, but is there a way to change the ugly blue plates to the new simple plates? Can I just go to the DMV/Tax Collector when I need to renew and ask for the newer design?

Keatre, you are supposed to receive new plates every 7 years unless your plates are "lost" or stolen. Take that for what it is.

I would like to know as well, and the route that doesn't involve claiming they were stolen if at all possible. My wife and I got new vehicles at about the same time, both after the July date that they would start issuing the new black and white plates and she got the new ones and I got the ugly rainbow ones. They suck and the black and white one is pretty sweet.

ccolley, you should receive new plates in July of 2019 unless your current ones are "lost".

Or you got into a wreck and the body shop threw your bumper with plate in the scrap dumpster.

One of my co-workers inquired about changing from ugly blue plates to the new ones, and was told no.

As a reminder, the ugly blue ones were selected from an online vote of Texas residents; that's what you get for not voting.

I figure they changed to save money. Lots of colors in the ugly ones.

My wife's car registration is up in November and the renewal notice stated her plates were due for upgrading. Are those sent to you automatically after you renew or do I need to do something in addition to paying my registration? Also, what do the new plates look like?

I'll probably trade my extra fee black plates for the new, standard issue plates at renewal time.

Willis, when you go to the Tax Assessor Collector's office to pay for registration, they will tack the plate fee on and give you a new set of plates. They are not sent automatically.
