When I turn on my lights neither the tail lights nor the dash lights come on. It has done this intermittently over the last year and a half or so and I could smack the dash at the light switch a couple of times and everything would start to work. Now nothing will come on.

I assumed it was the light switch because everything would work after I beat it for a second. I replaced the switch and it did not fix the problem.

I have checked the fuse and it's still good. Any other ideas?

If its not the switch itself, I would start looking at grounds.

Check the ground wire on the back of the frame, where the taillight harness runs.

The ground by the tail light is good. Where else do I check? I poked around in the dash as much as I could but I could only see about eight inches in and there are a **** ton of wires in there.

Agree that its a ground. I would try to find a wiring diagram and start there if you can't see anything. It probably runs below the the dash to the steering column or maybe near the radio housing. Just guessing, might be totally off.

I took another look at the light swtich. The wires coming out of the back of the switch are blackened.

Something caused the switch to overheat?

Yes. time to buy a new switch.

The switch is new. The dome light part of the switch works, as does the head light part.

I'm really starting to hate this truck.

I live on the east end of Galveston, as a matter of fact I have a '97 Silverado in the driveway that could be used to compare to if needed.
