la todd - in the time that you came to this forum, typed your question, waited for the witty commentary, you could have went to the uhaul website and confirmed that a 5x8 could be towed by a ford taurus, not to mention a f150.

i've towed a 5'x8' packed to the max with my jetta. that's all i have to add to this conversation.

The reason I asked is because I wondered whether they would want me to have a receiver hitch or if just the bumper was ok. I assume your Jetta had a receiver hitch and not a bumper mounted 2" ball.

I believe U-Haul only checks the towing capacity of the vehicle you show up with. I don't think they look at the hardware you're using--the ball, receiver, or bumper ratings.

you're correct. i put a receiver hitch on my car. due to not being as mechanically inclined as i would like, i don't know how it makes a difference, but i'm assuming it does.
