How long do you want to ignore this user?
Escort/Passport or V1?

Easy answer is don't speed. But curious what the auto board's opinions are.

I have a V1 and love it but I think the ability of the GPS in the 9500 to remember the location of false signals is pretty neat.

THREAD JACK:

I'm generally in the "just don't speed" crowd, but occasionally I speed (like everyone else).

Are the $40 Cobra's complete junk?

http://www.amazon.com/Cobra-ESD7400-Performance-Surveillance-Undetectable/dp/B001TUYQSW/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1331927750&sr=8-2

Or this Whistler?

I'm not going to spend $500 of a radar detector.

I have a V1.

Everything other than the 2 choices mentioned are a COMPLETE waste of money.

Helgs:

The detectors you listed are not worth your money or your time. However, one does not need to spend $500 to get a very good detector. The mid-level Bels that run about $200 or slightly over are excellent detectors that will provide a warning long before your vehicle can be targeted. No, they do not have the added features of the more expensive detectors, so you will need to know the basic premise of how radars and detectors work, and what they can and cannot do for you. Once you learn this, you will not have any need for the greatly expensive detectors.

Well, I've gone 8 yrs without a ticket (knock on wood) with no detector. Was just lookin for some "insurance". I don't speed too often.

in my opinion, for a pure radar detector the escort redline is the best at the moment. it outperforms my 3 yr old V1.

I went out and got a CDL. The idea of paying for a ticket with no option of Deferred Judification, or defensive driving, was enough incentive to slow down. Better gas mileage, and I never worry about a speeding ticket.

For the record I was under the impression that with laser's being used more and more often that if it actually goes off indicating that it has spotted a laser, you're already caught. Is that right?

Its tough to detect a laser before it detects you. Fortunately, lasers still are not THAT common in Texas. I think some DPS use them and I suppose some big city departments may use them but very few medium size or local agencies have laser. That said, lasers do "spread" out over distance which increases their ability to be detected. They reflect off of objects which also increases your ability to detect them. However, in real life, if you get a strong laser signal from a detector, you probably have been nailed.

It also helps to understand how police use radar (at least DPS). They are suppose to first visually ID the vehicle as speeding. In the academy and their FTO, a Trooper must be able to visually estimate a vehicles speed +- 2 MPH. They have to do this to get out of the academy and use radar. Once they visually ID the speeding vehicle, they confirm using radar. With laser, that means they see you speeding and do not pull the trigger till they are sure your speeding. By then, your toast. Unlike K Band that "sprays" all over the place, you stand very little chance of picking up a stray laser signal shot at another speeder before they get you.

Fortunately, most police still use K and Ka which can be picked up quite a distance off from its effective range when it is used on other vehicles ahead of you.

My last ticket (January 2004) was in Riesel, TX. I had a $150 Uniden RD that never even beeped.

Cop said that he used laser.

The RD was then stolen about a month later and I never bought another one. I just slowed down.

Houston uses laser, they've lit me up leaving for work hiding behind a pole at 6th and Yale.

I always did the speed limit through there for that reason.

And Agbq, that crap on no deferred for anyone with a CDL is ridiculas especially when you get the ticket in your private vehicle. I would never have a CDL unless I absolutely had to have it.

Oh, it's total Bull****! I never said I agree with it.

I no longer drive, I'm in an office supervising the fleet. However, every time I get the "random" DOT drug/alcohol screening sheets to send my drivers, I manage to be one of the 2-3 that has to go. This went on for over a year. I went 7 times. I finally mentioned it to one of the nurses and she told me it was the state, not them. Goes to show you how backwards the state is with CDL regulations. The "randomly" selected the manager for over a year, when I have drivers that haven't been "randomly" selected for over 5 years.

litig8r187, I've heard that about them supposed to estimate your speed first before clocking you, but I can't tell you how many times, the second I've come around a blind curve or over a hill and got blasted with radar. No way they had time visually estimate my speed, especially when this happens at night. Most of the time this happens, I'm nowhere close to speeding, anyway, since I've already picked up their radar signature shooting someone else. Hell, even driving down straight road at night, oncoming headlights, one of them is a cop who blasts me, when I'm not speeding. Estimated my speed first? Yeah right.

FiTxAg04, hence, the "supposed". Many of them get lazy and would rather hide out and just pop what ever comes down the road. The ones given lasers generally are going to be the ones that do it right though.

Also, I only know DPS does this. None of the other smaller agencies I have worked with have this level of training. Some may, but I haven't seen it.

I love my Escort 8500, especially the ability to adjust settings. If I was to buy a new radar detector, I'd get the 9500

Yeah it just pisses me off. I'd bet if I got a ticket and challenged it in court, the officer would testify that he visually estimated my speed before confirming that with radar.
