I'm selling a 2002 4x4 Trailblazer. After emails to friends, Facebook, and Texags classifieds, I'm thinking about posting an online ad. Both look pretty similar and I've used both when shopping...just wondering if one is better than another for sellers. I'd love to hear any firsthand experiences and advice on it too....thanks!

Craigslist is free. You'll have to sort through scam emails more, but a good place to sell a vehicle under $10,000. If you aren't in a rush. I'd try c-list for a week. Then autottader or cars.com will get it sold. Autotrader is more widely known, but both should work out. Just make sure your vehicle isn't the high end price when you search similar vehicles.

This. Autotrader will bring in better and usually more "ready to purchase" customers, but they also know the prices and actual value of your car better (due to all the cars) than say craigslist, where most people are just looking. craigslist seems to bring in a lot of riff-raff though too, so be warned of that. I quit posting my cell phone on craigslist because people would start texting me over the car 'will take price XXXX' without even having seen it or talked to me about the car. Just terrible negotiation tactics from people who probably don't have the money anyway.

If you do C-list, put in your ad that you won't open ads that don't put "Insert term here" in the subject line.

Then when replies come in with your ad title instead of 'insert term here' just delete without looking. It's some sort of scan.

I've sold two cars on CL with good luck but I'm getting a little more concerned about it.

Of course, DO NOT meet up at Gunspoint Mall!

I was starting to type up my CL ad until I opened litig8's article and my wife started reading it over my shoulder. Now I'm no longer allowed to use Craigslist for anything, haha.

Thanks all for the input, I like the idea of trying CL for a week with the subject line trick, etc. and then autotrader.

I've bought & sold four vehicles on AutoTrader.com over the years. Always sold in just a day or so - if you list it, be ready to sell.

Sold 2 cars on autotrader. First one sold in 3 days. The second in 2 days. I feel like the people looking were much better informed. I tried Craigslist and only scams came up or people that weren't ready to buy.
