I have yet to see a driveshaft drop in person

Tore through the U-joint on my Ranger and dropped the drive shaft. Fortunately, I was in the parking lot of the apartment complex I lived in at the time.

A friend in college had an MR2 Turbo, with some mods, and it was stupidly fast.

I think it was a Supra...and I think he paralyzed his friend...might as well have killed him.

Mythbusters did an episode on a d-shaft dump. They ended up not being able to make the car flip, it just bounced around a bit until the dug out a trench for the d-shaft to plant in.

I know you said you wanted a coupay, but if you can find an early speed3 for your kind of cash, that would be my first choice. Fun vehicle with actual room to DD it and cary stuff. Even my 6'2" 240lb frame fit neatly in a speed3, as opposed to a miata.

I dropped the transfercase end of a rear driveshaft on the North Dallas Tollway in CJ5 that didn't flip or pole vault or anything wierd. If a CJ5 didn't do any of those things I can't believe any other car would.

I found a 1996 Nissan 300zx with 128k miles for under $5k. I'm intrigued.

Turbo or non-turbo? I have a lot of friends with Z32s, they are awesome cars. 1996 was the last year for the Z32; it has some significant changes from the earlier years. Z32s are very comfortable, roomy, and a lot of fun.

The TT ones are very capable in a straight line, and can be really strong track cars. I've seen a few 600+hp Z32s on track, and one of my friends is puts down roughly 600hp on his. Stock, the turbos are on par with the later VQ-powered Zs.

But they're definitely not simple cars to work on (similar to the other Japanese sports cars from that era). Working on Z32s is not for the faint of heart; I hope you like working in extremely tight engine bays, and are comfortable with dropping an engine.

At 128k it's going to be in need of a substantial amount of service (the 120k) if it hasn't been done already.

I'd hop on www.twinturbo.net and start researching, if you're really interested.

Thanks! Honestly I'm not that savvy in the garage. If that's the case, should I avoid a lot of these cars?

Not sure if it's a turbo though. It's on Houston craigslist if you want to check it out.

People say I look like Hulk Hogan's kid. At least I'm not a dumbass driver like him.

NewHowdyAg, in the ad did they post any pictures of the car? If they didn't specify turbo or non-turbo, you should be able to tell by looking at the exterior.

Yeah, Nick Hogan crashed a heavily modded Supra a few years back, and the passenger was almost killed; guy is basically a vegetable now.
