Power Folding Mirrors - Suburban

So my wife and I took the plunge and bought a used 2011 suburban LT. After pulling it in the garage it's much tighter getting in and out than I had expected since we have two single car doors (guess my measurements were a little bit off). I know power folding mirrors are an option if you're buying new and have called around to several dealers to inquire about getting them installed on my vehicle with very mixed results and no real path forward. Some told me it can't be done, some said it can, but they won't do it b/c it would void the warranty (not sure about that). I also tried calling some independent shops and they said they couldn't do it because they would have to flash the PCM and only dealers can do that. I would really like to get this done to make getting in and out of our garage easier for my wife.

Any ideas Ags?

Where there's a will there's a way...if they come stock on certain trim packages it can be done it's just a matter of mounting them, wiring, and a flash of the "DCM"?

Never heard of that...do you mean PCM?

Thanks silverado_lover,

Yes...can't spell, meant PCM. That was my thought so I'm not sure why I'm having so much trouble with the dealers on this.

I give it 3 weeks before she rips a mirror off.

Post the VIN. I'll tell you EXACTLY what needs to be done, or if it can be done at all.

figherpilot, that would be great. I'll PM you the VIN. Don't mind doing it myself as long as it can be done and the dealer can flash the PCM to make it work.

You might wait a bit before doing the mirror swap. We are in a similiar garage situation with an F150 and an Expedition. I considered doing a power mirror swap on the wife's Ex but it was going to be $$$$. After parking the Ex a few times the wife is comfortable doing it and has had no problems. For the truck/Ex we role down the drivers side window and manually fold in one mirror. Of course backing in is easier than pulling in forwards.

Just a thought.

Your RPO code for the mirrors is DL8. (base power/heated mirror) You are wanting to go to DL3. (power folding, heated, electrochromic auto dimming with turn signal indicator)

There is no information in GMSI for the Suburban specifically, so I'm using the info from the Silverado as their electrical architecture is near identical. (caveat) The first thing we need to determine is whether or not this thing has a door control module. A truck with DL8 mirrors can have either a module OR the mirror controls hard-wired. The best way (only way other than dismantling) to find this is connect a TECH II and see if you can communicate with the driver door switch. (module) If there is no communication, then there is no module. Stop there and pad the garage door opening. It can't be done.

If there is a module, then you are OK to proceed. You will need to replace the driver door switch with one that accomodates the DL3 mirrors. The DL3 mirrors are going to be wicked expensive. Don't worry about getting them painted or ordering a particular finish. The skins can be swapped with the old mirrors as they are the same shape.

Programming the mirrors will cost a little. The dealership will have to contact GM to get the new program added to the database for that vehicle. GM charges us $50 and we don't mark that up. We just add the labor cost to the $50. Other dealers may be different.

Good luck with it. Have the dealer refer to PIT4417F (SI document ID 2686374)

Thanks fighter,

That's exactly the info I needed...and more than I've been able to get from any of the dealers around me. I'm not too far from CS....I assume you work for a dealer there. If I strike out locally and decide I do want to make this upgrade I might get in touch with you after checking whether my vehicle has the module. Really appreciate the help.

Yes, that is where I am. Call or come in and ask for Doc.

FighterPilot (hope you are still on the forums),

Question/favor. From reading the threads you are very knowledgeable, and I could use your help.

Request some council on the mirror upgrade.

Background:

In process of completing the DL3 mirror swap on my 2013, Z-71, Chevy Avalanche. It originally had the DL8 mirrors [heated and power adjustable].

Installed a used pair OEM DL8 mirrors from a 2012 Tahoe and got a pair of used driver and passenger switches from 2007 LTZ Avalanche (windows modules already programmed).

I installed the mirrors and the switches. (I used a dremel to modify my existing drivers side window switch bezel, worked great.)

What I gained:

Power folding mirrors (love this)
Curb Tilt Assist when in reverse (love this)
Auto Dim (Driver's Side). The auto sensing blue tint change on driver's side mirror to prevent glare (love this)
Mirror Turn Signals (love this)
Mirror Puddle Lamps (love this)
(Always had heated and adjustable mirrors- so no change on this, but retained.)

What I lost:

Interior dome lights when opening either of the the front doors using the door handle. Rear door opening triggers the dome lights normally. And when I unlock with a fob, the dome lights work normally. Basically, just front door opening actuation of dome light light is inoperative.

I have disconnected the battery to see if that would help to rest things and cure the problem, no luck.

Reading this thread, some have said to get the truck re-flashed.

My concerns/questions are:

1) DL3 options are working so the switches had the correct programming. Even the reverse park/tilt. So I don't want to lose those features. But want my dome lights back.

2) Any idea what options I would need to tell the dealer to do to re-flash? I assume: DL8, but what is the option for the reverse mirror tilt that came with vehicles with upgraded seats?

3) Anything else I should ask for?

4) Not sure my dealer will accommodate me. I have read that a dealer needs to contact GM to unlock something.

5) As all the mirrors functions works, to include the park/tilt. I think my window modules have the correct flash - just lost the dome light, so any idea which code needs to be flashed to get that working again? Thinking I just want to flash the missing piece so as not to lose my park/tilt. So, what option code triggers dome light activation for front doors?

6) Any idea where I can get a copy of the PIT4417F (SI document ID 2686374) that you referred to?

TIA
