Son headed to A&M Galveston in the fall. Grad present is fixin up his wheels. 1990 Chevy Blazer - at the moment completely stock. Plan a soft top. What else would you folks do? Needs tires - stock 15" wheels - suggestions?. He will probably never get serious off road. Let it fly.

Keep it low, put in a roll bar and good seats and seat belts.

In addition to the soft top, roll bar, seats, and seat belts, I'd do a 2.5" suspension lift - such as this - with new 33x12.5 BFG All Terrains. Maybe a new stereo? Then you can sell it to me

Knowing how teenage kids drive, you really want to put in a lift and huge tires on an already top-heavy vehicle?

I don't think a 2.5" lift is tall enough to cause concern. I also wouldn't call 33" tires "huge" as they come stock on several vehicles.

I'm not suggesting this:

tirty trees are small by todays standards, and skip on the soft top, somebody will just cut it for grins.

Here's my 1975 K5 from my college days. Street Fighter knows the vehicle. Add-a-leaf Front and Rear.
31" x 10.5" BFG Radial All-Terrain T/A tires
Improved stereo head unit and speakers. Not crazy but not factory.

Personally, I wouldn't waste your time or money "pimpin' it out". I'd replace/upgrade stuff that needs it and save the rest for gas and maintenance. You'll need it.

Does it have an air bag? Safety would be my first priority.

Neoprene seat covers would be a great addition for Galvestion.

Airbag in a K5? Don't lift it?

Damn people...why don't you make him wear a helmet and water wings all the time too...

A mild lift, 33s or 35s, rollbar and a decent stereo...a soft top will get all jacked up when they tear it to steal the radio.

come on now guys: long tube headers, turbo mufflers, mild cam, and vortec heads + compliant manifold if it is TBI.

Will the bigger tires fit on the stock wheels? Will they fit without the lift?

What color is it? Some Cragar Soft 8's or D Windows would probably look good.

There was someone on here that had some information regarding a 327 swap. He was pretty convinced that it was hands down the best option. Maybe talk to him.
Silvy

Not sure if I wanna go too fast in a Blazer...but regardless that is the best option for anything with TBI
BigPuma

-make the TBI go bye-bye.
-mild lift, maybe some 33s or 35s.
-upgrade the wheels
-roll cage
-depending on how crazy he wants to get off road would look at upgrading skid plates.

Okay, shows how I'm not into the whole 4x4 thing. When I hear "33s" I expect it to be a 33" wheel, not the outside diameter of the tire.

Found this picture online. Stock '91 Blazer with with 15x10 American Racing wheels and 33x12.5 tires. Which looks really good.

You probably won't want to hear this but...

Maybe spend some of the money on a newer but "less special" vehicle that he can take to a college campus and not constantly worry about (dents/scratches/drunks/vandals), and keep the prized Blazer at home to work on with him when he's home.

*edit* If he does take it to school with him, the smartest place to spend money would be in wear items and general maintenance. Hoses, belts, brakes, brake lines, bushings, etc. You never know what will need attention next on an older ride.

A new car would cost considerably more than just doing some simple mod's to a 90 K5...also it would take a hit with some force behind it to dent/ding the body of that K5.

If your son is really paranoid about scratches he can park towards the back of the parking lot cause not many people park back there but it's still not a far walk to the dorms

Invest the money on tutors so he can make grades and come to college station.

you should just give the truck away and buy him a huffy, some foam padding, and some duct tape to wrap around himself and the bike. you can't dent foam padding, and there is no way he can go that fast on the huffy

you should be able to fit 32x10.50s w/out any rubbing. great truck. had a 77.

Here's my old '85 k10 with the 2.5" lift and 33s. I think the 2.5" lift is perfect for these trucks. It doesn't mess with steering geometry - no bump steer, etc. It looks just a tad more aggressive than stock. It's really ends up with about the same ride height as a corresponding 3/4 ton model.

Edit - this pic shows that 33s fit on the factory rally wheels ok. The wheels aren't the optimal width for 33s, but they're fine.

I sold it about 3 years ago. I'll get another something like it some day.
