Happened 2 weeks ago. Driving down Woodway and the engine shuts off, dash reads "engine fail safe mode" and the steering wheel locks up. Then it reads low oil pressure. So, i go get an oil change and all seemed to be normal. Well it just happened again. Both days it was about 35 degrees outside. Any ideas on wtf is up and what i do???

Clean the throttle body
wow, great call!
just took it in for a test and they said its the throttle body. some issues with varnish or something... said the part is ~$500 from a ford dealership here in houston. this sound about right?

You can just clean it yourself if you feel up to it. They make throttle body cleaner you can use. I'd take it off before I cleaned it, but it's not necessary I don't think.
the scariest thing is to think about how I could have been going 70 down the freeway and this happens...with the wheel locking up and engine shutting off, how is this "safe"???

Ford engineers figure it's safer for the engine, since it's thinking you're running lean and going to detonate a piston a few feet into someone's barn walls.

Same thing happened on my Tahoe. Had to have the Throttle Body replaced. Apparently a common problem.
Same thing on a 2007 Exploder. Ford replaced for free under warranty. Out of warranty, I will be cleaning it if it happens again.

I have worked on a Ford or two before.
Buy a can of throttle body cleaner, use a screwdriver and hold the butterfly open, spray it and wipe the area where the body opens and closes. What happens is gunk accumulates around that area and when it sees a sticking, it will throw a failsafe mode code.
The Chevy dealer told me on my Tahoe it was an issue with parts from their manufacturer, not a cleaning issue. Not sure what it was, but they replaced it under warranty.

Obviously not. I was simply pointing out that a common problem of an engine going into failsafe mode is the throttle body.

mt - i'm not trying to be a dick. just trying to reinforce that the OP shouldn't go drop 500 on this new part just because your tahoe needed one. apples and oranges, imo.
I've heard of Ford Pintos catching fire and exploding from a rear end collision which was caused by a poorly located gas tank. I'm going to take my truck in to make sure my gas tank is not located in the same place.

I RAN A CODE ON IT : P062C / INTERNAL CONTROL MODULE VECHILE SPEED PERFORMANCE
TRUCK RUNS GREAT ,THEN I NOTICED THE SPEEDOMETER DROPPED TO 0 THEN BOUNCED BACK TO RIGHT SPEED ,JUST DONE THIS A COUPLE TIMES .
THEN MY HUSBAND DROVE TO WORK ONE MORNING CALLED ME SAID THE TRUCK LOST POWER
{ REDUCED} AND SAID " LIMP MODE " ?
SO HE DROVE IT BACK HOME AFTER WK .NEXT MORNING I GET IN IT FIRE IT UP GO DOWN THE RD 5 MILES OR SO NOTHING .NEXT DAY I DROVE IT AGAIN ,FEW MILES DOWN THE RD WENT INTO LIMP MODE ON ME SO I PULLED OVER CUT TRUCK OFF FEW MIN/ STARTED TRUCK UP DROVE IT BACK HOME .
