This weekend Discount Tire broke the wheel lock key on the wife's car. They claimed that whoever put the tires on previously torqued them too tightly. How often does this happen, or did they just not seat the key properly?
Depends on who/how they were installed. Gorilla and McGard generally are the best ones out there.
As far as installing them, I always remove them first and install them last. Always tightening by hand with a lug wrench/torque stick etc. Never an impact.
They are going to replace them with the Gorilla locks. I was just curious as to whether is a fairly common occurence, or incompetence. If it's the former, I don't really want to make them pay for it.
I always remove the locking lug before I go in there. OE Corvette wheel locks are by McGard. Last time I went in there to get more Eagle F1 tires, they went digging through my glovebox with dirty hands and smudged everything in there.
