I'm usually pretty good about keeping track of my registration and inspection but I've been relying too heavily on the renewal notice (which I never got) and unfortunately I didn't realize my registration sticker expired last month.


So...

I know I can't renew online or by mail now that I am expired and I have to go in. Questions:

1.) Do I have to go to the DMV office in the county I claim residence in? For example can I go to the DMV office in CS if I claim Bexar county as my residence?

2.) What kind of fees will I incur?

3.) What paperwork will I need when I go in to renew?


Anything else I should know?

Gotta do it in the county in which you reside, unless you want to change the registration to Brazos county.

Can you have relatives go to the bexar county tax office with your insurance card? Otherwise you can call over there and tell them you're going to school at A&M and dont have a chance to go back. Most tax offices are pretty understanding. When I was interning in DC, harris county let me renew my registration by mail.

Sure, if its your mom or dad, and they're on your insurance card, they can go there and renew it for you.

Unfortunately I am out on my own these days. Can a non-family member do it?

Try calling the tax office. I let mine expire and had to go in. I don't remember them asking for my DL. I think I just gave them a renewal notice and the insurance card, then just wrote them a check. Hell, I think I did it one year with an old, as in year before, renewal notice.

I would also highly recommend you don't go near the first of the month or anytime half the county shows up to pay property taxes.

I also don't think there was any charge over and above the cost of the renewal.

Tell 'em your ride was in the shop. No late charges or fees. Worked for me a few times.

I will have to do this when I move back to Texas. I'm almost done with a 6 month rotation in Indiana, and I didn't change my registration over, so it expired last month.

depends on several things: county (fees), car size, etc IIRC.

Shouldnt matter on size unless you have truck plates, then you pay based on tonnage.

Flaith, just go to the tax office, tell them you were working on an assignment out of state and your car was garaged here (wink wink), and you'll pay the 60 bucks or so (harris county) and be on your way.

Agree. Borrow a friends car and drive to the tax office. Tell them the car has been broke down with no money to fix it. N ow you do and you need the tags so you can drive it home!!

Otherwise some kind of penalty will result.

In Harris, they just ask you if you've been driving it after the regestration expired, and if you have any tickets for it. If you got ticketed for expired registration, you have to get that ticket paid first. If not, say no, and you pay no fees. In fact, if you say yes, I don't think you pay any fees.

Does anyone know if your registration expires on the first or last day of the indicated month?

Does a 9/09 sticker expire on the first, or the 30th?

Last day, and per TxDot's website you get a 5 day grace period

What do I need to take with me? Just insurance?

I've done this a lot, let my registration expire.

you just need to bring your DL (they may or may not ask for it) and current auto insurance. I've always driven my own car to the tax assessor's office, but you're risking getting pulled over for that. but they're not going to walk outside and look at your car or anything. they don't care how you got to the tax office, just that you did.

yea. the county tax assessor takes it. the DMV is a state office. and your registration is with the county.
